Who takes IELTS in Colombo, and why
Colombo has one of the most varied IELTS crowds in South Asia. On any given week, the people preparing include:
- School leavers after their A/Ls, or students from the city's international schools, applying to universities in Australia, the UK, Canada and New Zealand.
- Graduates of the University of Colombo, the University of Moratuwa, Sri Jayewardenepura in Nugegoda and the many private degree campuses, aiming for a master's overseas.
- IT and finance professionals: software engineers, QA and business analysts, accountants and CIMA or ACCA finalists who want to work or study abroad later.
- Nurses and health workers preparing for registration with overseas nursing bodies, where the required scores are often high in every module.
- Families planning a move, where one or both partners need a General Training score.
Each group needs a different kind of IELTS preparation in Colombo, which is why there is no single plan that suits everyone.
Academic or General Training?
The Listening and Speaking papers are the same for both. Reading and Writing differ.
- Academic is for university study and for many professional registrations, including most nursing and medical boards. Task 1 asks you to describe a chart, table, process or map.
- General Training is usually for work and migration routes. Reading uses everyday and workplace texts, and Task 1 is a letter.
If you are unsure, check the exact module your university, employer or registration body asks for before you start. Choosing the wrong one is a costly mistake. On IELTS Learning you pick your track when you register, and every Reading set, Writing prompt and mock test then matches it.
Fitting study into a Colombo week
Most people in Colombo lose a surprising amount of time to the road. A trip down Galle Road from Kollupitiya to Dehiwala at rush hour, or across the Baseline Road junctions, can take far longer than the distance suggests. Students who come in from Panadura, Moratuwa or Gampaha on the commuter trains often spend two hours a day travelling.
That time can be used. A sensible split looks like this:
- On the train or in a three-wheeler: vocabulary flashcards, Daily Vocabulary and one short Reading passage on your phone.
- Weekday evenings at home: one focused task, for example a Listening set with headphones or a Writing Task 1.
- Saturday or Sunday morning: a longer block for a full mock test or Writing Task 2, before the day gets hot and busy.
- Poya days and public holidays: a good chance to sit a complete mock under exam conditions.
University students should plan around semester exams, and working professionals around month-end and quarter-end closes. Studying little and often beats cramming the week before your test.

Booking the real test
IELTS test sessions are available in and around Colombo through the official IELTS providers. Dates and fees change, so always check the official booking sites rather than relying on what a friend paid last year. Book once your mock scores are consistently at or above your target, ideally with a few weeks of buffer before your application deadline.
If you are an Academic student, you can also tell us your study plans. With your agreement, our overseas education advisers can suggest courses and universities that fit them.
