The Reading paper in brief
You have 60 minutes for 40 questions across three passages, and there is no extra time to transfer answers. The passages get harder as you go, so Passage 3 needs the most time, not the least.
- Academic Reading uses long texts from books, journals and magazines, often on science, history or social topics.
- General Training Reading starts with short everyday texts such as notices and advertisements, moves on to workplace texts like job descriptions and staff guidelines, and ends with one longer general passage.
A band 7 in Academic Reading needs roughly 30 correct answers out of 40. General Training needs more correct answers for the same band, so do not assume GT is the easy option.
The question types that cost the most marks
TRUE / FALSE / NOT GIVEN
The biggest trap. FALSE means the passage says the opposite. NOT GIVEN means the passage does not say it at all. Students who read carefully often over-think and use their own knowledge. If the passage does not state it, it is NOT GIVEN, even if you know it to be true.
Matching Headings
You choose a heading that sums up the main idea of a whole paragraph, not one detail. Headings often repeat a word from the paragraph to tempt you. Read the first two sentences and the last sentence of each paragraph before deciding.
Matching Information
You find which paragraph contains a specific piece of information. The answers are not in order, and some paragraphs may be used more than once. Do these after questions that follow the passage order.
Summary completion with a word box
You drag words from a box into gaps. Several options fit the grammar; only one fits the meaning. Check the word class before the meaning.
Our sets also cover multiple choice, sentence completion, diagram labels and more, with explanations for every answer.
A timing strategy that works
- About 17 minutes for Passage 1, 20 for Passage 2, 23 for Passage 3.
- Read the questions first, then skim the passage for structure.
- Never spend more than two minutes on one question. Flag it and move on.
- Leave no blanks. There is no penalty for a wrong answer.
Reading practice for Colombo students
IELTS Reading practice in Colombo can fit into gaps you already have. A Reading set is easy to do on your phone on the coastal line between Mount Lavinia and Fort, or while you wait for a lecture at Reid Avenue or Katubedda to start. Save full three-passage tests for a laptop at home, because scrolling a long Academic passage on a small screen is slower than the real test.
Different groups in the city have different needs:
- University and A/L students usually need speed with long academic texts.
- Nurses preparing for overseas registration often need Academic Reading with a high score, so the harder passages matter.
- IT and finance professionals applying under work routes often take General Training, where the workplace texts feel familiar but the volume of questions is high.
Check which module your university, employer or registration body asks for.
One more local point: many Colombo students read quickly in Sinhala or Tamil and then slow down in English because they translate in their heads. Try to stop translating. Read for the main idea of each paragraph in English, then go back for detail only when a question sends you there. Reading English newspapers, magazine features or science articles for fifteen minutes a day builds the same speed outside the test.
How to practise well
IELTS Learning has 52 Reading sets for Academic and General Training. After each set:
- read the explanation for every wrong answer, not just the correct letter;
- let the Mistake Notebook collect your errors so you can see which question type keeps catching you;
- redo a set a few weeks later to check the fix has stuck.

Charged sets for band 7 and above
When you are scoring around 30 out of 40 consistently, ordinary practice stops pushing you. Our Charged Reading sets use denser passages, closer distractors and trickier NOT GIVEN statements. They are built for students aiming at 7.5 or 8, and they feel hard on purpose. If you can handle them under time, the real paper feels calmer.
Good IELTS Reading practice in Colombo is about doing fewer sets properly, not more sets quickly. Register free and try a timed set today.
