What the Reading test looks like
You have 60 minutes for 40 questions across three passages. There is no extra transfer time on the computer test, so your answers must be in place when the clock stops.
- Academic Reading uses long texts from books, journals and magazines, written for a general but educated reader.
- General Training Reading starts with short everyday texts (notices, adverts, timetables), moves to workplace texts, then ends with one longer general passage.
For band 7, Academic candidates typically need around 30 correct answers out of 40. General Training needs more correct answers for the same band, because the texts are considered easier.
The question types you must know
Our 52 Reading sets cover every common type, each with explanations:
- TRUE / FALSE / NOT GIVEN (or YES / NO / NOT GIVEN for opinions)
- Matching Headings with drag-and-drop
- Matching Information (which paragraph contains...)
- Summary completion with a word box, also drag-and-drop
- Sentence and note completion with a word limit
- Multiple choice, matching features and matching sentence endings
Common traps and how to avoid them
NOT GIVEN versus FALSE
FALSE means the passage says the opposite. NOT GIVEN means the passage simply does not tell you. The trap is using your own knowledge. If a passage on urban growth mentions a city's IT sector and the statement adds a detail the text never states, the answer is NOT GIVEN, however true it sounds.
Matching Headings
The heading must match the main idea of the paragraph, not a word you spotted in it. Read the first two sentences and the last sentence, then decide. Headings built from a word that appears in the paragraph are often distractors.
Word limits
"NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS" means three words is wrong, even if the meaning is right. Copy spellings exactly from the passage.
Spending too long on one question
If you cannot find an answer in about 90 seconds, flag it and move on. The navigator shows you every flagged question at the end.
A timing plan that works
- Passage 1: about 17 minutes. Usually the easiest; bank your marks here.
- Passage 2: about 20 minutes.
- Passage 3: about 23 minutes. The hardest, often with headings or opinion questions.
Leave a minute or two at the end to check that no question is blank. A guess costs nothing; a blank is always zero.
Reading habits for Bhubaneswar learners
Engineering and science students from KIIT, SOA, OUTR or IIT Bhubaneswar read technical English every day, which builds stamina. But textbook reading trains you to absorb information, while IELTS asks you to locate it fast and judge exactly what a sentence does and does not claim. Utkal University humanities students often have the opposite profile: strong comprehension, slower scanning.
If you studied in Odia medium until Class 10 or 12, you may be translating in your head without noticing, which costs time. The cure is volume: read English every day, outside study too. Long-form English-language newspaper features and science magazines work well, as do articles about topics you already know, such as Odisha's coastline, cyclone preparedness or Chilika's birdlife, where you can concentrate on the language rather than the content.
Short slots matter. A Reading passage fits a lunch break in Infocity or a gap between lectures, as long as you time it. Keep a small list of words you had to guess, and look them up the same evening; academic words such as "substantial", "subsequent" and "attribute" turn up across many topics.
How to practise with IELTS Learning
Effective IELTS Reading practice is about accuracy first, then speed.
- Start with one passage at a time, timed, until your accuracy is steady.
- Read the explanation for every wrong answer. It shows the exact line and why your choice did not fit.
- Review your Mistake Notebook weekly. If most errors are NOT GIVEN, do a focused batch of that type.
- Move to full 60-minute sets, then full mocks.
- Use the highlighter and notes tools on screen, so they become automatic.
Charged sets for 7+
Once you are scoring around 30 out of 40, ordinary sets may stop stretching you. Our Charged sets use denser passages and closer distractors, built for candidates aiming at 7 and above. Doing well on harder material makes the real test feel more comfortable.
