Raw scores show the minimum correct answers (out of 40) for that band. The overall band is the average of the four skills, so a stronger skill can make up for a weaker one.
IELTS band score FAQ
How the overall band is worked out, in plain English.
How is the IELTS overall band score calculated?
Add your Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking bands and divide by four. The average is then rounded to the nearest half band: an average ending in .25 rounds up to .5, and one ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band. For example 6.25 becomes 6.5, 6.75 becomes 7.0, and 6.125 becomes 6.0.
How many correct answers do I need for band 7?
In Listening, around 30 out of 40 is usually a band 7. Academic Reading also needs about 30 correct, while General Training Reading needs roughly 34, because the General texts are easier. Exact cut-offs vary a little between test versions.
Why does Writing Task 2 count more than Task 1?
Task 2 is longer (250 words vs 150) and carries twice the weight of Task 1. Your Writing band is roughly (Task 1 + 2 ร Task 2) รท 3, so improving Task 2 raises your Writing score faster.
Are Academic and General Training scored the same way?
Listening and Speaking are identical for both. Writing uses the same band descriptors. Only Reading differs: the raw-score-to-band table for General Training is stricter because its texts are less complex.
Is this calculator's result my official score?
No โ it is an estimate based on publicly documented conversion tables. Only an official IELTS test gives you an official band, but this is a reliable way to track your progress in practice tests.
