What band 7, 7.5 and 8 actually mean
A band 7 describes a good user of English who handles complex language well, with occasional inaccuracies. Band 8 is a very good user, with only rare errors. Here is what that looks like in each module:
- Listening: about 30 out of 40 for band 7, and around 35 for band 8. You must handle Part 4 lectures and fast Part 3 discussions without losing your place.
- Academic Reading: about 30 out of 40 for band 7. General Training needs more correct answers for the same band.
- Writing: a clear position all the way through, well-developed ideas, flexible paragraphing, and a range of vocabulary and structures with errors that do not affect meaning.
- Speaking: speaking at length without obvious effort, with some less common vocabulary and idiomatic language used naturally, and a range of complex structures.
Notice the gap between 6.5 and 7 in Writing and Speaking is mostly about range and control, not about being error-free.
Typical requirements for destinations popular from Colombo
Colombo students and professionals commonly look at Australia, the UK, Canada and New Zealand. Requirements vary widely by institution, course and route, and they change, so treat these as typical ranges only:
- UK universities often ask for 6.0 to 7.0 overall, with competitive or professional courses at the top of that range.
- Australian and New Zealand universities often ask for 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, and higher for some courses.
- Canadian universities often ask for 6.5 overall, with minimum module scores.
- Nursing and other health registration bodies abroad often ask for 7.0 or higher in every module, which is why so many nurses in Colombo work specifically towards a 7.
- Skilled work and migration routes often reward higher scores, but the details depend on the country and the scheme.
Always check the exact current requirement with the university, employer, registration body or immigration authority before you plan your preparation.
Who is chasing band 7 in Colombo
Three groups come up again and again. Nurses and health workers need 7 in every module, so one weak module, often Writing, holds everything back. Graduates from the University of Colombo, Moratuwa and private degree campuses applying for competitive master's programmes need a strong overall score. And IT, engineering and finance professionals working long weeks in Colombo's offices need a plan that works with limited time.
What they share is a busy week and a hard target. That makes efficient practice more important than long hours.
A realistic plan from 6 to 7+
This assumes you are scoring around 6 to 6.5 now and can give about an hour a day, more at weekends.
- Week 1: diagnose. Take a full mock test. Note your band in each module and the question types or criteria where you lost most.
- Weeks 2 to 4: fix the weakest module. Spend about half your time there. For Writing, rewrite essays after feedback. For Reading, focus on the question types in your Mistake Notebook.
- Weeks 3 to 6: raise the ceiling. Move from standard sets to Charged sets in Listening and Reading. Add more complex structures and topic vocabulary to Writing and Speaking.
- Every week: one timed Task 2 and three Speaking recordings. These modules improve slowly, so they need steady attention.
- Weeks 6 to 8: mock tests every 7 to 10 days. Book the real test once your last two or three mocks are at or above target.
Charged sets: practice that stretches you
Standard practice materials stop helping once you regularly score 30 or more. Our Charged Listening and Reading sets are deliberately harder: denser passages, faster audio, closer distractors and trickier NOT GIVEN statements. They are made for students aiming at 7.5 and 8.
Expect your score to drop at first. That is the point. When you can score well on Charged sets under time, the real exam usually feels more manageable.
