What 7, 7.5 and 8 mean in each module
Bands are given in half steps from 0 to 9. Here is what higher bands generally look like.
- Listening: band 7 typically needs about 30 out of 40 correct. Band 8 is usually around 35. At this level, almost all errors are about distractors or tiny spelling slips.
- Reading: in Academic, band 7 is typically around 30 out of 40, and band 8 around 35. General Training needs more correct answers for the same band.
- Writing: band 7 means you answer all parts of the question with a clear position, organise well, use less common vocabulary with some precision, and make frequent error-free sentences. Band 8 adds wider range and only occasional errors.
- Speaking: band 7 means you speak at length without noticeable effort, use some idiomatic language and a mix of structures. Band 8 sounds fluent and natural, with only rare hesitation.
Score targets for where Rajkot students go
Requirements vary widely and change over time, so always check the exact figure with the university, employer or immigration authority. As a general guide:
- Canada: many universities and colleges often ask for 6.0 to 6.5 overall, with higher scores for some programmes. Migration routes give more points for higher bands, which is why many skilled workers from Rajkot aim for 7 or above in each module.
- Australia and New Zealand: university entry is often 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0. Skilled migration routes typically give more weight to higher scores, so 7 or 8 in each module can matter.
- UK: many universities ask for 6.0 to 7.0 overall. Healthcare registration is often higher.
- USA: many master's programmes, including engineering and business, often look for 6.5 to 7.0.
- Germany and Ireland: English-taught master's degrees in engineering, popular with Rajkot mechanical and production graduates, often ask for around 6.5.
Notice the phrase "in each module". Many offers set a minimum for every module, so a 6.0 in Writing can block an application even with 7.5 overall.
Who in Saurashtra is aiming high, and why
- Engineering graduates applying for competitive master's places, where a higher IELTS can strengthen an application.
- Family-business heirs heading for an MBA abroad. Top business schools often look for strong English, and case discussions in class need confident speaking.
- Skilled tradespeople and diploma holders from the Shapar, Metoda and Aji industrial areas, for whom extra points on migration applications can make a real difference.
- Doctors and nurses who need high scores in each module for professional registration abroad.
Why many students stall at 6.5
Most students who stall have a single weak module, usually Writing or Speaking, while their Listening and Reading are already near 7. Common reasons:
- Writing: memorised phrases, ideas not developed, repeated grammar slips such as missing articles.
- Speaking: short answers, hesitation, and limited vocabulary on abstract Part 3 topics.
- Reading and Listening: losing four or five marks to the same trap every time.
An eight-week plan from 6 to 7+
- Week 1: take a full mock, convert the scores with the Band Score Calculator, and list your top three weaknesses from the Mistake Notebook and AI feedback.
- Weeks 2 to 3: focus on the weakest module. For Writing, one essay every other day plus a rewrite. For Speaking, daily recorded answers with the cue-card timer.
- Weeks 4 to 5: start the Charged sets for Listening and Reading. Book a 1-to-1 teacher session (from ₹299) to check your Writing or Speaking.
- Week 6: a second full mock. Compare with Week 1.
- Weeks 7 to 8: one mock a week, daily practice on weak points, and a final teacher session a few days before the test.
Charged sets: practice harder than the test
Charged sets are harder Listening and Reading sets built for students aiming at band 7 and above. They use faster audio, denser texts and closer distractors. Students often score lower on them than on standard sets at first, and that is the point. When you return to normal tests, the real paper feels more manageable.
Combine them with vocabulary work, such as Daily Vocabulary and spaced-repetition flashcards, because a wider range lifts both Writing and Speaking.
Full Access, at ₹999 for 2 months, unlocks all 15 mock tests and every Charged set. Start free with the sample mock to see where you stand today. Reaching IELTS band 7 is realistic for many students with a clear plan and steady practice.
