How to Get IELTS Band 7 or 8 in Jalandhar: A Realistic Plan

In Doaba, band 6 is often the number people talk about. But for many universities, professional registrations and points-based migration routes, a 7 or more makes a real difference. Here is what band 7, 7.5 and 8 actually look like, and a realistic way to get there.

  • 15 full mock tests
  • 88 Listening and 52 Reading practice sets
  • AI band feedback on Writing and Speaking
  • 1-to-1 teacher sessions from ₹299

What band 7, 7.5 and 8 mean

IELTS is scored from 0 to 9 in half bands. Your overall band is the average of the four modules, rounded to the nearest half band.

  • Listening: band 7 usually needs about 30 out of 40; band 8 needs roughly 35 or more. You need to catch details in Part 4 and keep spelling perfect.
  • Reading: in Academic, band 7 is typically around 30 out of 40. In General Training you need more correct answers for the same band. At 8, you are reliably handling NOT GIVEN and Matching Headings.
  • Writing: band 7 means you fully address the task, organise ideas logically, use a range of vocabulary including some less common words, and produce frequent error-free sentences. At 8, errors are rare.
  • Speaking: band 7 means you speak at length without noticeable effort, use idiomatic language and a mix of structures, and are easy to understand. Band 8 is fluent with only occasional hesitation.

Band 7.5 is the halfway step. Many students get there by pushing Listening and Reading to 8 while Writing and Speaking sit at 7.

Why Jalandhar students often aim higher

Students and workers from the Doaba often look at Canada, the UK, Australia and New Zealand. Requirements vary a lot and change, but as a general picture:

  • Many UK universities often ask for 6.0 to 7.0 overall, with higher scores for some courses such as law, medicine or journalism.
  • Canadian and Australian universities often ask for around 6.5 overall for postgraduate study, with minimum scores in each module.
  • Points-based migration in countries such as Canada and Australia typically gives more points for higher English scores, so a 7 or 8 in every module can matter more than a strong overall band.
  • Nurses and other professionals registering abroad often face requirements of 7 or higher in each module.

Always check the exact figure with the university, regulator or official immigration website. Do not rely on what worked for a relative a few years ago.

The 6 to 7 gap: where marks hide

Moving from 6 to 7 is usually not about learning much more English. It is about removing errors and adding control:

  • Listening and Reading: from about 23–26 correct answers to about 30. That is four to seven more answers, often lost to spelling, plurals, NOT GIVEN and timing.
  • Writing: fully answering every part of the Task 2 question, clear paragraphing with one main idea each, and fewer grammar slips.
  • Speaking: extending answers naturally, using a few less common words accurately, and clear word stress.

A realistic 10-week plan

This assumes you are at about 6 overall and can study an hour a day with a longer weekend session.

  1. Week 1: take a full mock. Note your band in each module and look at your Mistake Notebook.
  2. Weeks 2–3: focus on your weakest module. If it is Writing, write three Task 2 essays a week and act on the criterion feedback.
  3. Weeks 4–5: switch to Charged Listening and Reading sets, harder sets built for 7+ targets. Expect your scores to dip at first; that is normal.
  4. Week 6: second full mock. Compare with week 1.
  5. Weeks 7–8: Speaking practice daily with the cue-card timer and AI transcript feedback; book a 1-to-1 teacher session (from ₹299) for a mock interview.
  6. Week 9: two full mocks, one per weekend day if you can.
  7. Week 10: lighter practice, the Quick Wrap checklist, and rest before the test.

Studying for 7+ around Jalandhar life

If you are at LPU, NIT Jalandhar or one of the city colleges, final-year exams and placements can swallow weeks at a time. Book your IELTS date with that calendar in mind, not in the middle of semester exams. If you work in a family business, mornings before the shop opens are often the quietest time for Writing. And if you are preparing while helping relatives with their own visa paperwork, keep your study slot fixed; it is easy for it to disappear.

Charged sets and the rest of the toolkit

IELTS Learning's Charged Listening and Reading sets are tougher than standard practice, so the real test can feel more manageable. Alongside them you have 15 full mock tests, 104 Writing prompts with criterion-level feedback, and spaced-repetition vocabulary flashcards for the less common words band 7 needs.

Academic students can also share their study plans, and our overseas education advisers can suggest universities and courses if you would like that.

Questions from students in Jalandhar

Is band 7 in every module harder than 7 overall?

Yes. A 7 overall can include a 6.5 in one module, while 7 in each module means no weak area at all. Check which one your university, regulator or visa route asks for.

How long does it take to go from 6 to 7?

It varies, but with an hour a day of focused practice, many students need around two to three months. Weak Writing or Speaking usually takes longer than Listening or Reading.

What are Charged sets?

They are harder Listening and Reading practice sets for students aiming at band 7 and above. They are a step up from standard sets, so the real test can feel more manageable.

Is band 8 realistic for me?

If you already score 7 to 7.5, band 8 in Listening and Reading is often achievable with accuracy work. Band 8 in Writing and Speaking needs a very high level of control and usually takes longer.
