What band 7, 7.5 and 8 actually mean
Bands are not percentages. Band 7 describes a "good user" of English who handles complex language well despite occasional inaccuracies. Band 8 is a "very good user" with only rare, unsystematic errors. Here is what that looks like module by module.
- Listening: band 7 is typically about 30 out of 40 correct, and band 8 roughly 35 or more. The jump is mostly Part 3 and Part 4 accuracy.
- Academic Reading: band 7 is typically about 30 out of 40, and band 8 roughly 35 or more. General Training Reading needs more correct answers for the same band.
- Writing: band 7 needs a clear position developed throughout Task 2, a clear overview in Task 1, flexible linking, some less common vocabulary used accurately, and frequent error-free sentences.
- Speaking: band 7 means you speak at length without noticeable effort, use idiomatic language with some awareness of style, and are easy to understand throughout.
Your overall band is the average of the four modules, rounded to the nearest half band. That means one module at 6 can pull a 7 average down, which is why requirements per module matter.
Typical requirements for where Trichy students go
Trichy's engineering and science graduates most often look at the USA, Germany, Canada, the UK and Australia for postgraduate study, and Canada, Australia and the UK for work and migration. Requirements vary a great deal by institution, course and year, so treat these as typical patterns and always check the exact figure.
- UK master's programmes often ask for 6.0 to 7.0 overall, with higher-ranked universities and courses such as law, medicine or communication often at the upper end.
- US graduate schools that accept IELTS often look for around 6.5 to 7.0 overall; some competitive programmes and teaching assistantships ask for more, sometimes with a separate Speaking minimum.
- English-taught master's in Germany often ask for around 6.0 to 7.0, depending on the university.
- Canada and Australia universities commonly set 6.5 overall with minimum module scores, and immigration programmes typically award more points for higher General Training bands.
- Nursing and healthcare registration in the UK, Ireland and Australia often requires 7.0 or higher in each module.
Check the requirement directly with the university, employer or immigration authority before you set your target.
From 6 to 7+: a realistic plan
Moving from 6.0 to 7.0 typically takes many weeks of deliberate practice, not a weekend crash course. Here is a plan we suggest for a final-year student or working engineer in Trichy with about an hour and a half a day.
- Week 1: diagnose. Take a full mock and identify the one module furthest below target. Read the Study Notes chapter for it.
- Weeks 2 to 3: fix the weakest module first. For Writing, two essays a week, each rewritten after feedback. For Speaking, three recorded Part 2 answers a week and one teacher session. For Reading or Listening, one timed set daily with a full review.
- Weeks 4 to 5: move to Charged sets. Once standard Listening and Reading sets reach 30 or more, switch to Charged sets. They use faster audio, denser texts and closer paraphrase so the real test feels manageable.
- Weeks 6 to 7: full mocks. One full mock a week plus targeted practice. Track each criterion in Writing and Speaking, not just the overall band.
- Final week: Quick Wrap. Use the Quick Wrap checklist, sleep well and stop learning new material two days before.
What usually holds Trichy students back at 6.5
From the kinds of answers we see, three patterns are common among capable engineering and science graduates:
- Writing that is correct but thin. Clean grammar, but ideas that are listed rather than explained. Band 7 Task Response needs development.
- Short Speaking answers. Many technical students answer precisely and stop. Extending answers naturally is often worth half a band.
- Reading Passage 3 rushed. Spending too long on Passage 1 leaves too little time for the hardest passage.
None of these are about intelligence or vocabulary size. They are about exam habits, which is why targeted practice works.
Where teacher sessions fit at this level
At band 7 and above, the difference between scores is subtle. A 20-minute Book a Teacher session, from ₹299, can show you exactly why an essay is a 6.5 rather than a 7, or which pronunciation features are keeping your Speaking at 6.5. Book them after you have used AI feedback to clear the obvious errors, so the teacher's time goes on the difficult ones.
