What 7, 7.5 and 8 actually mean
IELTS bands run from 0 to 9 in half bands. Your overall band is the average of the four modules, rounded to the nearest half band, so one weak module can pull you below 7 even if the others are strong.
- Listening: band 7 needs roughly 30 out of 40 correct, and band 8 usually needs around 35. At this level you are losing very few marks, so spelling and concentration in Part 4 matter enormously.
- Reading: in Academic, band 7 is roughly 30 out of 40; General Training needs more correct answers for the same band. Higher bands demand speed with dense texts and near-perfect handling of NOT GIVEN.
- Writing: band 7 means you answer every part of the question with a clear, developed position, organise logically, use less common vocabulary with some precision and produce frequent error-free sentences. Band 8 means errors are rare and vocabulary is natural and flexible.
- Speaking: band 7 means you speak at length without noticeable effort, use idiomatic language, flexible grammar, and are easy to understand. Band 8 is fluent with only occasional hesitation and very few errors.
Typical requirements for destinations popular in Vizag
Students from Visakhapatnam and the rest of Andhra Pradesh apply widely abroad, especially for master's degrees. Requirements vary by institution, course and visa, and they change, so always check the official source. As a general guide:
- USA: many universities ask for an overall 6.5 to 7.0 for postgraduate courses, sometimes with a minimum per module.
- UK: many universities typically ask for 6.0 to 7.0 overall, with higher scores often required for law, medicine and teaching.
- Canada and Australia: universities often ask for 6.5 overall; skilled migration programmes often award significantly more points for higher scores such as 7 or 8 in each module.
- Germany: English-taught master's programmes often accept 6.5 or above, depending on the university.
- Healthcare registration in the UK, Ireland or Australia often asks for 7.0 in each module, so nurses and doctors from Andhra Medical College and other institutions need a strong score across all four.
Engineers from the port, steel, shipbuilding, refinery and pharma sectors looking at migration should check the points tables of the relevant immigration authority, as moving from 7 to 8 in each module can make a real difference.
A realistic plan from 6 to 7+
Moving from 6 to 7 typically takes 8 to 12 weeks of focused practice, depending on where your gaps are. A plan that suits many Vizag students and working professionals:
- Weeks 1 to 2: diagnose. Take a full mock and note your band for each module, your weakest question types in Reading and Listening, and your lowest Writing and Speaking criterion.
- Weeks 3 to 6: fix the biggest leak. If Writing is 6 and everything else is 7, almost all your extra time goes into Writing: three tasks a week with criterion-level feedback, plus rewrites.
- Weeks 3 to 8: raise accuracy. In Listening and Reading, your target is consistency. Review every error in the Mistake Notebook and look for patterns.
- Weeks 6 to 10: move to Charged sets for Listening and Reading, and book one or two teacher sessions for Speaking and Writing.
- Final fortnight: two or three full mocks under strict conditions. Book the real test when two in a row reach your target.
Charged sets: practice that is harder than the test
Ordinary practice sets can make a 6.5 student feel ready when they are not. Our Charged Listening and Reading sets are written to be harder than the typical exam: faster speech, closer distractors, denser passages and more of the question types that separate 7 from 8. If you can score well on Charged sets, the real test should feel more comfortable.
Habits that separate 7 from 6.5
- Writing: stop using memorised openings. Examiners reward precise vocabulary used naturally, not "big words".
- Speaking: extend Part 3 answers with reasons, examples and comparisons, and use a range of tenses naturally.
- Reading and Listening: treat every lost mark as information. A score of 29 out of 40 is close to 7, and two fewer spelling errors can be the difference.
- Daily English: read long articles, listen to podcasts, and learn words in phrases. The free Daily Vocabulary helps you build this habit five words at a time.
