What 7, 7.5 and 8 actually mean
IELTS bands describe ability, not effort. A 7 means you are a "good user" of English: you handle complex language well, with occasional errors and misunderstandings. An 8 is a "very good user", with only rare, unsystematic errors.
In each module, that looks like this:
- Listening: band 7 needs roughly 30 out of 40 correct, band 8 roughly 35. You must catch distractors and spell reliably.
- Academic Reading: band 7 needs roughly 30 out of 40, band 8 roughly 35. General Training Reading needs more correct answers for the same band.
- Writing: band 7 means a clear position throughout, well-developed paragraphs, some less common vocabulary used accurately, and frequent error-free sentences. Band 8 means very few errors and skilful organisation.
- Speaking: band 7 means you speak at length without noticeable effort, use some idiomatic language and complex structures, and are easy to understand. Band 8 means fluent and flexible, with only occasional hesitation.
Overall bands are the average of the four modules, rounded to the nearest half band. Use the Band Score Calculator to see how your module scores combine.
Typical requirements for Indore's popular destinations
Students from Indore and the wider Malwa region most often apply to Canada, the UK, Australia, the USA, Germany, Ireland and New Zealand. Requirements vary by institution, course and visa type, and they change, so treat these only as typical ranges:
- UK universities: often 6.0 to 7.0 overall for postgraduate courses, with minimums in each module. Competitive courses may ask for more.
- Canadian universities: often 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, though some programmes ask for 7.0.
- Australian universities: often 6.5 overall, with higher requirements for nursing, teaching and some health courses.
- Skilled migration: points-based systems in Canada and Australia typically give extra points for higher scores, so many applicants aim for 7, 8 or above in each module.
- Doctors and nurses: professional registration bodies typically ask for high scores in each module, often 7.0 or more.
Always check the exact requirement with the university, employer, professional body or immigration authority before you set your target. For a master's plan, you can also share your preferred countries and intake with us, and, if you agree, our overseas education advisers can suggest universities that match your score.
Why students in Indore get stuck at 6.5
The pattern is familiar. Many engineering and MBA students here read and listen well, and score 7 or above in those modules, but Writing and Speaking sit at 6.0 or 6.5. The reasons are usually:
- Writing: ideas are listed rather than developed, conclusions repeat the introduction, and memorised phrases replace precise vocabulary.
- Speaking: answers are short and safe, with few complex sentences and flat intonation.
- Reading: the last passage takes too long, and two or three NOT GIVEN answers go wrong every time.
A realistic plan from 6 to 7+
Assuming about an hour a day on weekdays and two to three hours at weekends, many students need eight to twelve weeks. Here is a structure:
- Week 1: diagnose. Take a full mock test. Note your band in each module and the criterion that is lowest in Writing and Speaking.
- Weeks 2 to 4: fix the biggest weakness. Spend half your time on the lowest module. For Writing, rewrite essays using the criterion feedback. For Speaking, record Part 3 answers and extend them with reasons and examples.
- Weeks 5 to 8: raise difficulty. Move from standard sets to Charged sets in Listening and Reading. Write Task 2 essays on unfamiliar topics. Book a 1-to-1 online teacher session, from ₹299, for an honest view of where your Writing or Speaking stands.
- Weeks 9 to 12: simulate. One full mock a week under exam conditions, with detailed review. A final teacher session for a mock Speaking test.
Charged sets: practice that is harder than the test
Our Charged Listening and Reading sets are built for students aiming at 7 and above. They use faster speech, closer distractors, denser passages and more paraphrasing than standard sets. If you can score well on Charged sets, the real test should feel more comfortable. Pair them with the Mistake Notebook, which saves every wrong answer for review.
