What band 7, 7.5 and 8 actually mean
IELTS describes band 7 as a "good user" and band 8 as a "very good user". In practice, for each module:
- Listening: band 7 needs roughly 30 out of 40 correct. Band 8 needs around 35. That leaves little room for spelling or plural slips.
- Reading: in Academic, band 7 needs roughly 30 out of 40. General Training needs more correct answers for the same band. Band 8 means very few errors, even on the hardest passage.
- Writing: band 7 means a clear position throughout, well-organised paragraphs, a range of less common vocabulary used accurately, and mostly error-free complex sentences. Band 8 means occasional slips only.
- Speaking: band 7 means you speak at length without noticeable effort, use idiomatic language with some flexibility, and are easy to understand throughout. Band 8 means fluent, precise and only rarely hesitant.
The overall band is the average of the four, rounded to the nearest half band. Check how your scores combine with the free Band Score Calculator.
Typical requirements for Guwahati's popular destinations
Requirements vary, change over time and differ by course, so always check with the university, regulator or immigration authority. As a general picture:
- Nurses from Guwahati's nursing and medical colleges often look at the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. Nursing regulators commonly ask for around 7.0 in each module, sometimes allowing one module slightly lower. That "in each module" rule is why a strong overall score is not always enough.
- Master's applicants from IIT Guwahati, Gauhati University and Cotton University often apply to the UK, Germany, Canada, Australia and the USA. Many UK universities ask for 6.0 to 7.0 overall, with higher scores often required for law, medicine, journalism or competitive programmes.
- Skilled migration to Canada or Australia often awards more points for higher scores, so 7, 8 or above can make a meaningful difference to an application.
Find your exact requirement in writing before you plan. "7 overall" and "7 in each component" are very different targets.
Why candidates stall at 6 to 6.5
The jump from 6.5 to 7 is often the hardest. Common reasons:
- Writing stuck at 6 because essays answer the question generally but do not develop ideas fully, or linking is mechanical.
- Speaking stuck at 6 because answers are short, or vocabulary is safe and repetitive.
- Reading losing 3 or 4 marks in the final Academic passage due to time.
- Listening losing marks to spelling and plurals, especially in Parts 1 and 4.
Most students are only a few habits away from 7 in each module.
A realistic plan from 6 to 7+
- Week 1: diagnose. Sit a full mock under exam conditions. Note your band in each module and your lowest criterion in Writing and Speaking.
- Weeks 2–5: fix the weakest module first. If it is Writing, write two Task 2 essays a week, read the criterion feedback and rewrite weak paragraphs. If it is Speaking, record answers daily and read the transcripts.
- Weeks 2–5 in parallel: keep Listening and Reading sharp with three or four sets a week and a Mistake Notebook review every weekend.
- Weeks 6–8: step up difficulty. Move to Charged Listening and Reading sets, built for band 7+ students. If you score well on harder sets, regular tests feel calmer.
- Weeks 6–8: get human feedback. Book one or two 1-to-1 online teacher sessions (about 20 minutes, from ₹299), one for a Speaking mock and one for an essay review.
- Final two weeks: two or three full mocks, spaced out, with careful review.
Planning around Guwahati life
High targets need steady weekly time. Nursing students on clinical postings at hospitals around the city should plan around duty rosters, not hope for free days. IIT Guwahati and university students should avoid starting intensive preparation during end-semester exams. If your commute crosses the city at peak hours, keep vocabulary and flashcards for the journey and full mocks for weekends.
Students from other north-eastern states living in Guwahati for college may also want to sit the test before going home for long holidays, when routine and internet access can be less predictable. Book your date with enough margin to retake if you fall just short.
