Who takes IELTS in Guwahati, and why
Guwahati has a mix of IELTS candidates you will not find in many Indian cities. Final-year engineering students at IIT Guwahati and Assam Engineering College look at master's programmes in the UK, Germany, Canada, Australia and the USA. Postgraduates from Gauhati University and Cotton University apply for research and taught master's courses. A large group are nurses and nursing students from the city's medical and nursing colleges, who often look at the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.
The city is also a gathering point. Students from Shillong, Imphal, Kohima, Aizawl, Itanagar, Agartala, Dibrugarh and Tezpur come here for college, coaching or work, and many of them take the test while living in Guwahati. Some candidates are working professionals in banking, oil and gas, tea, government projects or the growing IT and BPO sector who want to move on a work or skilled-migration route.
Academic or General Training: which one is yours?
Before you start, choose your track, because the Reading and Writing papers differ.
- Academic is for university admission at undergraduate or postgraduate level, and is often requested for professional registration, including many nursing and medical bodies.
- General Training is usually for work, training or migration routes, such as skilled migration to Canada, Australia or New Zealand.
Listening and Speaking are the same for both. If you are unsure, check what your university, regulator or immigration authority asks for, in writing, before you book. On IELTS Learning you pick a track when you sign up and the Reading sets, Writing prompts and mock tests follow that track.
Planning around college, hospital shifts and Guwahati traffic
Most people preparing in Guwahati are not free all day. A practical plan usually looks like this:
- Weeks 1–2: diagnose. Take the free sample mock test, all four sections, in one sitting. Note your band in each module.
- Weeks 3–6: build skills. Short daily sessions: one Listening or Reading set, one Writing task every two or three days, Speaking prompts recorded on your phone.
- Weeks 7–10: test and fix. A full mock each week, then a day spent on the Mistake Notebook, where every wrong answer is saved automatically.
- Final week: consolidate. Light practice, the Quick Wrap checklist and plenty of sleep.
If you are on rotating shifts at a hospital, swap the daily session for three longer sessions a week. If you commute along GS Road or across the Saraighat bridge, use bus or cab time for Daily Vocabulary and flashcards rather than full tests; save Listening for a quiet room with headphones.

Where the test fits in
The test itself is booked through IDP or the British Council, and test sessions are available in and around Guwahati, both on paper and on computer.
