Who takes IELTS in Kolkata, and why
Kolkata sends a steady stream of students and professionals abroad, and each group needs IELTS for a slightly different reason.
- Postgraduate applicants from Jadavpur University, the University of Calcutta, Presidency University, St. Xavier's and the city's engineering colleges often look at master's courses in the UK, Ireland, Germany, Canada and Australia.
- IT and engineering professionals working in Salt Lake Sector V and New Town frequently need a score for skilled migration or an overseas posting.
- Nurses and healthcare workers from Kolkata and the wider state commonly target the UK, Ireland and Australia, where professional registration bodies set their own English requirements.
- Families planning to settle abroad usually take General Training for migration or work visas.
Requirements vary a great deal, so always check the exact band with the university, employer or immigration authority before you set your target.
Academic or General Training: choose first
The Listening and Speaking tests are the same for everyone. Reading and Writing differ.
- Academic is for university admission and many professional registrations. Reading uses long, dense passages, and Writing Task 1 asks you to describe a chart, table, process or map.
- General Training is for most work and migration routes. Reading uses everyday, workplace and longer general texts, and Writing Task 1 is a letter.
On IELTS Learning you pick your track when you sign up, and every Reading set and Writing prompt you see matches that track. If you are not sure, ask the organisation you are applying to; do not guess.
Fitting IELTS around life in Kolkata
The city's rhythm affects how you should plan. Semester exams at most universities cluster at predictable times, office hours in the IT parks can run late, and the long Durga Puja break in autumn is either a gift of free days or a month lost to celebrations, depending on how you use it.
A realistic plan for most people here looks like this:
- Weeks 1–2: take the free sample mock test to find your starting band, then read the Study Notes chapter for your weakest module.
- Weeks 3–6: daily short practice. One Listening or Reading set on weekdays (about 30–60 minutes), one Writing task every second day, Speaking prompts on the metro or before sleep.
- Weeks 7–10: a full mock every weekend, with the following week spent fixing what the mock exposed.
- Final week: lighter work, the Quick Wrap checklist, and early nights.
