Who takes IELTS in Sylhet, and why
Almost every family in Sylhet seems to have someone in London, Birmingham, Bradford or Manchester, so it is no surprise that the UK sits at the top of most students' lists. But the reasons people sit IELTS here are wider than one destination:
- School and college leavers from institutions such as MC College who want an undergraduate place in the UK, Canada or Australia.
- Graduates of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), especially in engineering, computer science and the sciences, applying for a master's abroad.
- Doctors and nurses linked to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and the city's hospitals, who may need IELTS for a registration body or a postgraduate course.
- Families joining relatives overseas, who often need to show a set level of English for a family or spouse route.
- Working professionals in banking, tea estate management, NGOs and IT who want to keep career options open.
Each group needs a slightly different kind of preparation, which is why IELTS preparation in Sylhet works best when it starts with the right test.
Academic, General Training, or a UKVI version?
IELTS Learning lets you choose a track when you sign up: Academic or General Training.
- Choose Academic if you are applying to a university or to many professional registration bodies. Reading uses long, academic passages and Writing Task 1 asks you to describe a chart, table, process or map.
- Choose General Training if your goal is work experience, secondary education or some migration routes. Reading uses everyday and workplace texts and Writing Task 1 is a letter.
Because so many Sylheti families are planning UK moves, one extra check matters here. Some UK routes ask for IELTS for UKVI or IELTS Life Skills rather than the standard test. We do not give visa advice, so please check exactly which IELTS test your route or university asks for before you book. The skills you practise with us are the same either way.
Planning your study around life in Sylhet
Sylhet has its own rhythm, and a good plan respects it.
- University students: SUST and the private universities around the city have busy semester exams. Do your heaviest IELTS work in the breaks and keep 30 minutes a day of Listening or vocabulary during exam weeks.
- Health workers: if you rotate through day and night shifts at Osmani or another hospital, use short sections, such as one Reading passage or one Speaking cue card, instead of waiting for a free three-hour block.
- The monsoon: heavy rain and waterlogged roads can make getting anywhere slow. Online practice means a flooded lane or a long wait for a CNG never costs you a study session.
- Family life: joint households can be noisy. Early morning, before the house wakes up, is often the best time for a timed Listening test with headphones.

Booking the real test
IELTS is owned by the British Council, IDP and Cambridge University Press & Assessment. IELTS Learning is independent and not connected to any of them. Test sessions are available in and around Sylhet, and you book through the official IELTS providers in Bangladesh. Fees and dates change, so always check the official booking sites rather than relying on what friends or relatives were charged a few years ago.
