Why IELTS comes up so often in Kota
Every year students arrive in Kota from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, the North-East and almost every other state, with one goal: an engineering or medical seat. Along the way, many of them start looking at options beyond India too. Some want a bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science or biomedical sciences abroad; others plan to finish a degree in India first and then apply for a master's.
Whatever the timing, universities in the UK, Australia, Canada, Ireland and New Zealand, and many English-taught programmes in Germany and elsewhere in Europe, usually ask for an English test score, and IELTS is the one most students choose. Students at the University of Kota, Rajasthan Technical University and the city's medical and engineering colleges take it for the same reason a few years later.
Choosing to study abroad is a positive choice in its own right, not a "plan B". Many students simply find that a course abroad fits their interests better.
IELTS is a different kind of exam (and that is good news)
If you have spent a year or two with rank lists, percentiles and cut-offs, IELTS can feel strangely relaxed. There is no rank and no competition with other candidates. Your band (0 to 9, in half bands) depends only on your own Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. If you need a 6.5 and you score a 6.5, you have succeeded, whatever anyone else scores that day.
The habits you have already built still help: reading questions carefully, managing time, reviewing mistakes. What changes is the content. Instead of formulas and reactions, you build listening stamina, reading speed with English texts, clear paragraph writing and the confidence to speak for two minutes without stopping.
Academic or General Training: which one you need
- Academic is for students applying to universities, including undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Almost every student in Kota planning to study abroad needs this one.
- General Training is mainly for work and migration routes. If a family member is planning to move abroad for a job, they may need GT.
Listening and Speaking are the same in both. Reading and Writing Task 1 differ: Academic Writing Task 1 asks you to describe a chart, table, process or map, while GT asks for a letter. If you are unsure, check what your target university or authority asks for before you start practising.
Fitting IELTS preparation in Kota around a packed routine
Kota days are long. Many students have classes, test series and self-study back to back, so IELTS preparation in Kota works best in small, regular blocks rather than one heroic weekend.
- Short daily slots. Twenty to thirty minutes of Listening or Reading after dinner, or before the hostel gets noisy, adds up quickly.
- One longer block a week. Use a Sunday or a lighter day for a Writing task or a Speaking session.
- Start early if you can. If your entrance exams come first, finish them, rest, and then give IELTS six to ten focused weeks. If you are already in college, spread it across a semester.
- Keep your phone useful. The platform works on a phone, so a ten-minute vocabulary review while waiting for a lift or a meal is real practice.
Test sessions are available in and around Kota and in nearby cities. Book through the official IDP or British Council websites and check current dates and fees there, as these change.

Look after yourself while you prepare
You have probably worked very hard already. IELTS does not need all-nighters. Sleep properly, eat at regular times, step outside for a walk by the riverfront or around your area, and talk to your family or friends when things feel heavy. A rested mind listens and writes better than a tired one.
You can create a free account in a minute, take the free sample mock, and try the Band Score Calculator to understand how the overall band is worked out.
