Who takes IELTS in Mumbai, and why
Mumbai sends people abroad from almost every corner of its economy. Commerce, management and economics graduates from colleges affiliated to the University of Mumbai often apply for master's programmes in finance, analytics and business in the UK, Ireland, Canada and Australia. Engineering graduates from IIT Bombay, VJTI and the many private colleges in the suburbs and Navi Mumbai frequently look at the USA, Germany and Canada for postgraduate study.
The city's working professionals take the test too. People in banking, IT, media, shipping and hospitality sit IELTS when an overseas employer, a university or a professional body asks for proof of English. Nurses and allied health workers often plan for the UK, Ireland or Australia, and many families across the western suburbs and Thane prepare for Canada or Australia through skilled migration routes.
Whatever your reason, IELTS preparation in Mumbai starts with the same question: what score do you need? Each of these goals asks for a different score and sometimes a different version of the test, so it is worth working out your target before you start.
Academic or General Training: pick your track first
Academic is the usual choice for undergraduate and postgraduate study, and for some professional registrations. General Training is commonly used for work visas, migration and some vocational courses. Listening and Speaking are the same in both; Reading and Writing are different.
If you are not sure which one you need, check with the university, employer or immigration authority before you book. When you sign up with IELTS Learning you choose a track, and your Reading passages and Writing prompts follow it, so you never waste an evening on the wrong kind of task.
Fitting preparation around a Mumbai day
A typical day here leaves odd pockets of time rather than long free evenings. A ride on the Western or Central line from Borivali or Dombivli can easily take an hour each way, and the Metro and road traffic add their own delays. Use that time well, but use it for the right things:
- On the train or bus: vocabulary flashcards, Daily Vocabulary, reviewing your Mistake Notebook, reading a Study Notes chapter.
- At home, with headphones: timed Listening sets and full mock tests, which need quiet and an unbroken stretch.
- At a desk: Writing tasks. Typing a 250-word essay on a crowded local is not realistic practice.
College students can plan heavier weeks between semester exams and lighter ones during them. If you work in BKC, Lower Parel or Powai, an early-morning slot before the commute is often easier to protect than a late-night one. During the monsoon, when trains can be disrupted, having everything online means a lost evening of travel does not have to become a lost evening of study.
Everything on the platform, in one place
IELTS Learning works like a study kit you carry in your pocket:
- 15 full mock tests covering all four sections, on screens that behave like the computer-delivered IELTS, with instant band scores for Listening and Reading.
- 88 Listening sets and 52 Reading sets, plus harder Charged sets for students aiming at band 7 and above.
- 104 Writing prompts with an AI-estimated band for each of the four criteria, and 186 Speaking prompts with AI feedback on your transcript.
- Book a Teacher: roughly 20-minute 1-to-1 online sessions from ₹299, useful for Speaking practice or a second opinion on your Writing.
- Study tools: Study Notes for each module, English Improvement, a personal study plan, and the Quick Wrap checklist for the final days.
If you are going abroad for study, you can also tell us your plans (countries, course, intake), and with your permission our overseas education advisers can suggest universities and courses.
Booking the real test
IELTS is owned by the British Council, IDP and Cambridge University Press & Assessment, and you book it through IDP or the British Council. Test sessions are available in and around Mumbai, both computer-delivered and on paper. Fees and dates change, so always check the official booking sites rather than relying on what a friend paid last year. IELTS Learning is independent of the test owners; our job is to help you prepare.
