Who takes IELTS in Kanpur, and why
Kanpur's test-takers are a more varied group than people often assume. On the Academic side, you have final-year B.Tech students from HBTU and the many private engineering colleges around the city looking at master's programmes in the UK, Germany, Canada, Australia and the USA. You have IIT Kanpur graduates and research scholars applying for PhD positions or postdoctoral work, where a strong English score is often part of the paperwork even after years of studying in English. CSJM University students in management, science and commerce are increasingly applying for one-year master's courses abroad, and medical graduates from GSVM Medical College often look at the UK or Australia for further training.
General Training candidates are just as common. Kanpur's leather, saddlery and footwear exporters, textile and garment businesses, chemical and fertiliser plants and defence manufacturing units employ thousands of engineers, technicians, accountants and supervisors. Some of them are planning skilled migration to Canada or Australia; others are joining family members abroad.
Academic or General Training: choosing your track
The choice depends on what the score is for, not on which test feels easier.
- Academic: for admission to undergraduate or postgraduate study, and for many professional registrations (doctors and nurses usually need Academic).
- General Training: often used for work visas and permanent residence applications, for example in Canada and Australia.
Listening and Speaking are the same in both. Reading and Writing differ: Academic uses long, abstract passages and asks you to describe charts or processes in Task 1, while General Training uses everyday and workplace texts and asks for a letter. If you are unsure, check the requirement on the official site of the university or immigration authority before you start, because switching tracks halfway wastes weeks. On IELTS Learning you pick your track when you register, and your practice sets, mocks and Writing prompts follow it.
Fitting IELTS around a Kanpur week
Most people preparing here are not full-time IELTS students. They are juggling semester exams, a placement season, a factory shift or a family business. A realistic plan uses short, regular sessions instead of occasional marathons.
- College students: 45 minutes on weekday evenings for one module, plus one longer weekend block. Avoid starting intensive preparation in the middle of end-semester exams at CSJMU or HBTU; begin a month earlier or after results.
- Working professionals in Panki, Dada Nagar or Fazalganj: a Listening set during a lunch break on your phone, Writing on two evenings, and a full mock on Sunday morning.
- Research scholars: you probably read academic English all day, so put more time into Writing structure and Speaking fluency than into Reading.
Three months is a sensible window for most people moving from about band 6 to 6.5 or 7. Some need less, some need more, so use your first mock to decide.
What the platform gives you
IELTS Learning is a website that works on your phone and laptop. It is not a coaching centre and has no branch in Kanpur or anywhere else, which means you can use it from any part of the city.
- 15 full mock tests in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, on screens that behave like the computer-delivered IELTS, with instant Listening and Reading bands.
- 88 Listening sets and 52 Reading sets, plus harder "Charged" sets for band 7+ targets.
- 104 Writing prompts with an AI-estimated band for each of the four criteria, and 186 Speaking prompts with AI feedback on your transcript.
- Book a Teacher: roughly 20-minute 1-to-1 online sessions from ₹299, booked separately.
- A Mistake Notebook, Study Notes, vocabulary flashcards, English Improvement lessons and a personal study plan.
If you are an Academic student, you can also share your study plans with us, and, if you agree, our overseas education advisers can suggest universities and courses that match.
Booking the real test
The test itself is booked through IDP or the British Council, and test sessions are available in and around Kanpur, with Lucknow also close by. Fees, dates and formats change, so check the official booking sites rather than relying on what a friend paid last year. Decide between computer-delivered and paper-based early, because it affects how you practise, especially for Listening.
