Who takes IELTS in Siliguri, and why
Siliguri is the junction town of North Bengal. Students arrive here from Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Kurseong, the Dooars, Sikkim and the North-Eastern states, and many of them are already thinking about study or work abroad. The IELTS candidates in the city reflect that mix:
- Graduates and final-year students from the University of North Bengal and the city's colleges who want a master's degree in the UK, Australia, Canada or New Zealand.
- Nurses and health workers, many of them from the hills and neighbouring states, who are looking at registration and jobs in the UK, Ireland, Australia or New Zealand.
- Hospitality and tourism professionals whose hotel, travel and tea-estate experience opens doors in Australia, Canada and the Gulf.
- Families planning to migrate or join relatives already settled overseas.
Because the town is a gateway, many candidates live an hour or more away from the city centre. That is one reason online IELTS preparation in Siliguri makes sense: the practice comes to you, rather than you going to it.
Academic or General Training: which one is yours?
Choose your track before you start, because Reading and Writing Task 1 differ between them.
- Academic is usually for university admission and for professional registration, which is why most nurses and doctors take it.
- General Training is usually for work visas, migration and some training courses.
Listening and Speaking are the same for both. If you are unsure, check with the university, employer or immigration authority that will receive your score. Do not guess: taking the wrong test is an expensive mistake.
Fitting preparation around life in Siliguri
A realistic plan matters more than an ambitious one. A few patterns work well here:
- College students can use free periods and the evening for one 40-minute skill session a day, with a full mock test at the weekend.
- Working nurses on rotating shifts do better with short, fixed blocks: a Listening set before a shift, vocabulary flashcards on the bus or shared jeep, Writing on a day off.
- Hotel and tourism staff often have a busy season and a quiet one. Use the quieter months for heavy practice and keep a lighter routine in peak season.
- Students coming down from the hills may find mobile data patchier at home than in town. Plan full mocks for times and places where your connection is steady, and use shorter sets when it is not.
