Who takes IELTS in Thane, and why
Thane is no longer just a suburb that empties into Mumbai every morning. It has its own colleges, IT parks and a huge residential belt stretching from Kopri and Naupada out along Ghodbunder Road, with Kalwa, Mumbra and the Kalyan–Dombivli towns close by. That mix produces a very particular group of IELTS candidates:
- Final-year and recent graduates from colleges affiliated to the University of Mumbai, applying for master's programmes in the UK, Canada, Ireland, Australia or Germany.
- IT and back-office professionals working in Wagle Estate, Thane-Belapur Road or the business parks along Ghodbunder Road, who want an overseas degree or a work move.
- Families in Thane, Dombivli, Kalyan and Badlapur planning permanent residence abroad, often with both partners taking the test.
- Healthcare and engineering professionals whose registration bodies or employers abroad ask for an IELTS score.
Each group has a different deadline and a different amount of free time, which is why a single fixed timetable rarely works here.
Academic or General Training: decide first
Before you open a single practice test, choose your track. Academic is usually needed for university admission and many professional registrations. General Training is usually used for work and migration, including many Canadian and Australian immigration routes. Listening and Speaking are the same for both; Reading and Writing are different.
If you are unsure, check the exact requirement on the university, employer or immigration authority's website. On IELTS Learning you pick your track when you sign up, and the Reading sets, Writing prompts and mock tests then match it.
Fitting IELTS preparation around Thane life
The honest constraint for most people in Thane is time, not motivation. A typical day might include a crowded Central line train to Dadar or CST, or a slow drive on Ghodbunder Road or the Eastern Express Highway. So build your IELTS preparation in Thane around the gaps you already have:
- Commute time (20–40 minutes): vocabulary flashcards, a Listening section with earphones, or a reading passage on your phone. Save Speaking for somewhere you can talk aloud.
- Weekday evenings (45–60 minutes): one focused skill a night, for example a Writing Task 2 on Tuesday and a full Reading test on Thursday.
- Weekend mornings (3 hours): a full mock test under timed conditions, before the society gets noisy.
Students in Kalyan and Dombivli who spend even longer on the train can treat the journey as their daily Listening and vocabulary slot and keep evenings for Writing.

A sensible order to start
- Take the free sample mock test to see where you stand today.
- Turn your raw scores into bands with the Band Score Calculator.
- Note the gap between your current band and the one your university or visa route asks for.
- Spend most of your practice time on your weakest module, not your favourite one.
- Re-test with a full mock every one to two weeks.
If you are an Academic student, you can also tell us your study plans (countries, course and intake), and with your permission our overseas education advisers can suggest universities and courses that fit your profile.
