Who takes IELTS in Dehradun, and why
Few Indian cities of this size have such a mix of IELTS candidates. In one week you might find a Class 12 student at one of the Doon boarding schools planning an undergraduate degree in the UK, an engineering student at UPES or Graphic Era aiming for a master's in Canada, Australia or Germany, and a hotel-management graduate who wants to work in hospitality in the Gulf, Australia or Canada.
There are also many candidates from the hill districts: Tehri, Pauri, Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Almora and beyond. Some move to Dehradun for college; others come down only for the test itself. Nurses, chefs, engineers and families applying for migration add to the list. Each group needs a different score, a different module and a different plan.
Academic or General Training: choose first
Before you buy a book or open a practice set, settle which test you are taking.
- Academic is for university admission (undergraduate or postgraduate) and for some professional registrations, such as many nursing and medical boards.
- General Training is mostly for work visas, migration and some vocational or school-level courses.
Listening and Speaking are the same in both. Reading and Writing Task 1 differ: Academic Task 1 asks you to describe a chart, table, process or map, while General Training Task 1 is a letter. If you are not sure, ask the university or authority you are applying to. On IELTS Learning you choose your track when you sign up, and the practice sets follow it.
Fitting preparation into a Dehradun timetable
Most students here are not short of motivation; they are short of predictable hours.
- University students in Bidholi, Prem Nagar or Clement Town often have long lab days and semester exams. Two focused 40-minute sessions on weekdays and a full mock at the weekend usually works better than a single exhausting Sunday.
- Boarding-school students have fixed prep hours and limited screen time. A phone-friendly platform lets you use short windows for Listening and vocabulary, and save Writing for the weekend.
- Working candidates in hotels, hospitals or offices on shifts can practise Reading during a quiet afternoon and record Speaking answers in the evening.
- Students in the hills who come down to Dehradun only occasionally can do almost all their preparation from home, provided the internet connection is steady enough for audio.

A simple four-stage plan

- Test. Take a full mock every week or two. Review every wrong answer in your Mistake Notebook before moving on.
- Polish. In the last fortnight, book one or two teacher sessions for Speaking or Writing, and use Quick Wrap the night before.
Booking the test and planning beyond it
IELTS test sessions are available in and around Dehradun through IDP and the British Council. Check dates, fees and formats on their official booking sites, because these change. Book only once your mock scores are consistently at or near your target.
If you are taking Academic IELTS for university, you can tell us your study plans (countries, course and intake). With your permission, our overseas education advisers can suggest universities and courses that fit your profile and your score.
