Why a full mock matters more than another practice set
Practice sets build skills. A mock shows you whether those skills hold up for nearly three hours. Many students who score well on single Reading passages lose marks in a full test because they run short of time on Passage 3, or because concentration drops during Listening Part 4.
A full IELTS mock test tells you three things no single exercise can:
- Your real band in each module and overall.
- Your stamina: whether your accuracy falls in the second half.
- Your timing: where minutes are leaking away.
How our mock tests work
IELTS Learning offers 15 complete mock tests covering Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, for both Academic and General Training. The screens are designed to behave like the computer-delivered IELTS:
- A visible timer for each section.
- A question navigator so you can jump between questions.
- Flag for review for questions you want to come back to.
- A highlighter and notes tool for Reading passages.
- Drag-and-drop for Matching Headings and word-box summaries.
Listening and Reading are scored instantly, with the correct answer and an explanation for each question. Writing receives an AI-estimated band for each of the four criteria, and Speaking gets AI feedback on your transcript. If you want a human opinion, you can book a 20-minute teacher session from ₹299.
The free sample mock includes all four sections and needs no card. Find it on our practice tests page.
Taking a mock under exam conditions at home
A mock is only useful if it is honest. In a busy Dehradun household, or a shared PG room in Prem Nagar, that takes a little planning.
- Choose your slot. Pick a three-hour block when the house is quietest. Many students prefer early morning, before traffic noise on the main road picks up.
- Check your connection. If you are in Mussoorie, the hills or anywhere the signal drops during rain, test your internet first and keep your phone hotspot ready as a backup.
- Use wired or good headphones for Listening, as you will in the test.
- Clear the desk. No phone, no dictionary, no notes. A glass of water is fine.
- Do the sections in order: Listening, Reading, Writing, without long breaks. Do Speaking afterwards or the next day, as the real Speaking test is often on a separate slot.
- Do not pause the timer. If you run out of time, that is the most important result of the day.
Using your results
Finishing a mock is half the work. The other half is the review, which should take almost as long as the test.
- Listening and Reading: open every wrong answer. Was it a vocabulary gap, a spelling mistake, a missed paraphrase, or simply running out of time? Each wrong answer is saved to your Mistake Notebook automatically.
- Writing: read the criterion-by-criterion feedback. If Task Response is your lowest score, the fix is planning, not fancier vocabulary.
- Speaking: listen to yourself and read your transcript. Count fillers and long pauses.
- Overall: enter your scores into the Band Score Calculator and compare with the score your university or visa route needs.
Write down one priority for the next week. One, not five.
How many mocks should you take?
There is no magic number, but a pattern that works for many students is:
- One diagnostic mock at the start.
- One mock every 7–14 days while you build skills.
- Two or three mocks in the final three weeks, spaced so you have time to review each one.
That is typically five to eight full mocks before the test. Taking a mock every day without reviewing teaches you very little. Taking just one the week before the exam leaves no time to act on the results.
Mock tests for Dehradun's different candidates
The way you use mocks depends on why you are taking IELTS.
- UPES, DIT and Graphic Era students planning a master's abroad often need 6.5 or 7 overall with no band below a set minimum. Track your weakest module closely, because one low band can hold back an application.
- Hospitality and hotel-management graduates taking General Training for work abroad should focus mocks on GT Reading, which has everyday and workplace texts, and on letter writing.
- School leavers from the city's boarding schools usually have strong Speaking but may lose marks on Academic Writing Task 1. Use mocks to time Task 1 strictly to 20 minutes.
