Why full mocks matter more than extra practice sets
Practice sets build skills. Mocks test whether those skills survive two and a half hours of pressure. Many students score well on single Reading passages and then lose marks in the third passage of a full test because their concentration fades.
A full mock shows you three things that short practice cannot:
- Stamina: whether your accuracy drops in Listening Part 4 or Reading Passage 3.
- Timing: whether you leave enough minutes for Writing Task 2, which counts for more than Task 1.
- Your real starting band: a number you can plan from, rather than a guess.
How the IELTS Learning mock tests work
Each of the 15 mock tests includes all four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The screens are designed to work like the computer-delivered IELTS:
- a running timer for each section;
- a question navigator so you can jump between questions;
- flag for review for answers you want to revisit;
- a highlighter and notes tool for Reading passages;
- drag-and-drop for Matching Headings and word-box summaries.
Listening and Reading are marked instantly, with a band score and the correct answers. Writing gets an AI-estimated band for each of the four criteria with comments. Speaking prompts run with real timers, and you get AI feedback on your transcript.
Our tests follow the official IELTS format. They are not official IELTS papers, and IELTS Learning is independent of the test owners.
Taking a mock at home in Ranchi
Exam conditions are hard to create in a busy home, so plan your IELTS mock test like a real appointment.
Choose your slot. Early Sunday morning is often the quietest time in a joint family home or a shared flat in Bariatu or Harmu. In a college hostel, a weekday morning when your roommates are in lectures can work better than a weekend.
Prepare your setup.
- Charge your laptop fully and keep the charger nearby in case of a power interruption.
- Check your internet before you start, and switch the phone to silent and out of reach.
- Use wired or closed headphones for Listening, as you would at the test.
- Keep only blank paper and a pen for Writing plans.
Respect the clock. Do the sections in order, without pausing. Listening runs for about 30 minutes, Reading for 60, Writing for 60. For Speaking, sit somewhere you can talk out loud for 11 to 14 minutes without feeling self-conscious.
If you are deciding between paper and computer. Test sessions in and around Ranchi may offer both formats, so check the official IDP or British Council sites. Take at least two of your mocks on our computer-style screens before you decide. Some students find typing their Writing faster and neater; others, especially those who rarely type long answers at college or work, find the keyboard slows them down. A mock will tell you which group you are in.
Using your results
A mock score is only useful if it changes what you do next week.
- Listening and Reading: open every wrong answer. Was it vocabulary, a spelling slip, a misread question or timing? Your mistakes are saved to the Mistake Notebook automatically.
- Writing: look at the lowest of your four criterion bands. That criterion is your next week's focus, not the overall band.
- Speaking: read the transcript. Count the fillers, notice where you stopped, and pick one habit to change.
- Overall: use the Band Score Calculator to see how your module bands round to an overall score.
Then spend the next week on targeted practice sets in your weakest area before the next mock.
How many mock tests should you take?
There is no magic number, but a common pattern is:
- One mock at the start to find your baseline.
- One every one to two weeks during preparation, with targeted practice in between.
- Two or three in the final fortnight, spaced out so you can learn from each one.
Taking a mock every day rarely helps. Without time to fix mistakes, you just repeat them.
