Why mock tests matter
Practising single question types builds skill. A full mock tests something different: whether you can keep that skill going for nearly three hours, under a clock, with no pause between sections.
Many students from Ludhiana are surprised the first time they sit a full IELTS mock test. Their Reading score is lower than in practice because they ran out of time on Passage 3, or their Writing Task 2 is unfinished because Task 1 took 30 minutes. Those are timing problems, not English problems, and only full mocks reveal them.
How our mock tests work
IELTS Learning has 15 complete mock tests covering Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, for both Academic and General Training. The screens work like the computer-delivered IELTS:
- a visible timer for each section
- a question navigator so you can jump between questions
- flag for review to mark answers you want to check
- a highlighter and notes tool for Reading passages
- drag-and-drop for Matching Headings and word-box summaries
Listening and Reading are scored instantly with a band score. Writing gets an AI-estimated band for each of the four criteria with feedback, and Speaking gives AI feedback on your transcript.
If you are choosing between paper and computer at a Ludhiana test session, trying both styles helps. The computer format suits fast typists and people who like editing their essays; paper suits those who think better with a pen.
Start with the free mock
The free sample mock test includes all four sections and needs no card. Take it before you do anything else. Your result becomes your baseline, and every later mock is measured against it.
Do not be discouraged if the first score is lower than you hoped. Many people in Ludhiana take their first full mock after months of only hearing about IELTS from friends and relatives who have already gone to Canada or Australia. A real number, even a disappointing one, is far more useful than someone else's story about how easy or hard the test was.
Recreating exam conditions at home
The real test is quiet and strict. Most homes in Ludhiana are neither, especially in a joint family or a house above a shop. A few practical steps help:
- Pick the right time. Early morning or late evening is usually quietest. Tell the family you need three hours without interruption.
- Use headphones for Listening, and play the audio once only, as in the real test.
- Put your phone in another room. Not on silent; in another room.
- No pausing. If the doorbell rings, let someone else answer it.
- Use a laptop if you will take the computer test, so you get used to typing your essays and reading on screen.
- Do the Speaking part aloud, recording yourself, rather than answering in your head.
Using your results
A score on its own tells you little. The value is in the review afterwards.
- Listening and Reading: open every wrong answer. Was it a spelling error, a missed keyword, a NOT GIVEN confusion, or simply running out of time? Wrong answers are saved automatically to your Mistake Notebook so you can revisit them.
- Writing: read the feedback criterion by criterion. If Task Response is lower than the rest, the issue is ideas and relevance, not grammar.
- Speaking: read your transcript. Look for very short answers, repeated words and long pauses.
Then spend the following week on the weakest area before your next mock. You can also use the free Band Score Calculator to see how module scores combine into an overall band.
How many mocks should you take?
There is no fixed number, but a sensible pattern for most people is:
- One at the start to find your level.
- One every week or ten days during preparation, with targeted practice in between.
- Two or three in the final fortnight, at the same time of day as your booked test.
Taking a mock every day is usually less useful than taking fewer and reviewing each one properly. If your scores have stopped rising, change what you practise between mocks rather than adding more mocks.
