Why full mocks matter more than extra questions
Practice sets build skills. Mocks test whether those skills survive two and a half hours of pressure. Plenty of students score well on single Reading passages, then fade on Passage 3 in a full test because their concentration has gone.
A full mock tells you three things practice sets cannot:
- Stamina: whether your accuracy holds from the first Listening question to the end of Writing.
- Timing: whether you can finish Reading in 60 minutes and leave time for Task 2.
- Interface comfort: whether you can use the navigator, highlighter and flag tools without thinking about them.
How our mock tests work
IELTS Learning has 15 complete mock tests covering Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Each one follows the official format and runs on screens built to work like the computer-delivered IELTS.
- A visible timer for every section.
- A question navigator so you can jump between questions and see what is unanswered.
- Flag for review, a highlighter and notes, just as on test day.
- Drag-and-drop for Matching Headings and word-box summaries.
- Instant band scores for Listening and Reading.
- AI-estimated bands for Writing and Speaking on each of the four criteria, with feedback.
There is also a free sample mock test with all four sections. You can find it on the practice tests page without entering a card.
Sitting a mock under exam conditions in Baroda
A mock is only useful if you take it seriously. Home in Vadodara can be noisy: pressure-cooker whistles, wedding processions on a winter evening, a neighbour's scooter warming up. Plan around that.
- Choose your time. Early morning, before the city gets loud and before the afternoon heat, works well for most people. Sunday mornings are often the quietest.
- Tell your family. Ask for two and a half to three hours without interruptions. Put your phone in another room.
- Use a laptop if you can. Your test centre screen will be a full-sized monitor, so a laptop is closer than a phone for the full mock.
- Wear wired headphones for Listening, and check the volume on a practice clip first.
- Do not pause. If you stop the timer to make tea, the result means less.
- Take Speaking seriously too. Answer out loud, standing or sitting upright as you would in front of an examiner.
Using your results
The band score is the least interesting part of a mock. The useful part is the pattern behind it.
- Listening: are you losing marks in one part (often Part 4) or on spelling and plurals?
- Reading: which question types are costing you? Many students find the problem is one type, such as NOT GIVEN or Matching Headings, rather than reading in general.
- Writing: which criterion is lowest? Coherence and Cohesion and Lexical Resource need different fixes.
- Speaking: does your transcript show long pauses, repeated words or very short Part 3 answers?
Every wrong answer goes into your Mistake Notebook automatically. Review it within two days of the mock, while you still remember why you chose each answer. Then plug your module scores into the Band Score Calculator to see how they round to an overall band.
How many mocks, and when
There is no magic number, but a pattern that works for many students is:
- One mock at the start as a baseline.
- One mock every 7 to 10 days during preparation, with practice sets in between to fix the weak areas it shows.
- One final mock about a week before your test, then light revision only.
Most students take between four and eight full mocks. Taking one every day is rarely a good idea; you need time between mocks to actually improve.
Computer or paper: which to practise for
Test sessions are available in and around Vadodara in both formats, so check the official IDP or British Council booking sites to see what is offered on your preferred date. If you are booking the computer-delivered test, our mocks give you weeks of practice on the same kind of screen. If you are sitting the paper test, still use our mocks for timing, but remember that on paper you get 10 minutes at the end of Listening to transfer answers.
