Why a full mock matters more than one more practice set
Practice sets build skills. A full IELTS mock test shows whether those skills survive under pressure. Many students in Kandy do well on single Reading passages and then run out of time on passage three in the real exam, or lose concentration in Listening Part 4 after a long morning. Only a complete, timed test exposes that.
A mock also tells you something honest about your timing for test day. Some Kandy candidates sit the exam locally; others travel to Colombo for a date that suits them. If you are planning an early train down from Kandy and a long day, you need to know you can still focus in the third hour.
How our IELTS mock tests work
IELTS Learning has 15 full mock tests for Academic and General Training. Each includes Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, and the screens work like the computer-delivered IELTS:
- a countdown timer that keeps running, just as it does in the test centre
- a question navigator so you can jump between questions
- flag for review to mark questions you want to come back to
- a highlighter and notes tool for Reading passages
- drag-and-drop for matching headings and summaries with a word box
Listening and Reading are marked instantly, with a band score and the correct answers. Writing gets an AI-estimated band for each of the four criteria, and Speaking gives you feedback on the transcript of your answers.
The free sample mock test is complete, with all four sections, and needs no card. It is the best first step for anyone in Kandy who has never sat a computer-based test.
Setting up exam conditions at home in Kandy
A mock taken with breaks, a phone buzzing and someone switching on the television tells you very little. Try this:
- Choose your time. Early morning is quieter in most Kandy homes, before traffic and three-wheeler horns build up on the main roads.
- Check the weather. If a heavy shower is coming, a tin or asbestos roof can drown out Listening audio. Use closed headphones or wait for it to pass.
- Use a laptop if you can. The real computer-delivered test uses a full keyboard and screen. Typing your essays is good practice, especially if you mostly write by hand at school or university.
- Put your phone in another room. Tell your family you need about three hours.
- Go straight through. Listening, Reading and Writing back to back, with no pausing. Do Speaking separately if you need to, but keep it timed.
- Write in the time given. No extra minutes for Task 2, even if you are mid-sentence.
How to use your results
The score is a starting point, not the finish line.
- Listening and Reading: open every wrong answer. Was it a vocabulary gap, a spelling mistake, a NOT GIVEN trap or simply running out of time? Each cause needs a different fix. Wrong answers are saved to your Mistake Notebook automatically, so you can review them later.
- Writing: look at which of the four criteria is lowest. A low Task Response score needs a different plan from a low Grammatical Range and Accuracy score.
- Speaking: read your transcript. Count how often you repeat the same phrases, and look for answers that end too soon.
Use the Band Score Calculator to see how many more correct answers would lift you to your target band.
How many mocks should you take?
Mocks are tiring, so use them as checkpoints rather than daily practice. A typical pattern:
- One at the start (the free sample) to set your baseline
- One every week or fortnight during preparation, depending on how long you have
- Two in the final fortnight, at the same time of day as your booked test
Between mocks, work on your weak areas with shorter practice sets. Taking mock after mock without reviewing them rarely raises a score. If your test date is close, keep at least one unseen mock for the final week so your last score is a fair reading.
