Why mock tests matter more than extra practice sets
Students in Chittagong often practise hard but in pieces: a Reading passage on the shuttle train, a Writing task on Friday, Listening when the house is quiet. That builds skills, but it does not build stamina. The real test asks you to do Listening, Reading and Writing in one sitting of nearly three hours, and many candidates lose marks in the final Reading passage or in Writing Task 2 simply because they are tired.
An IELTS mock test in Chittagong, taken properly at home, solves three problems at once:
- it shows your current band honestly, before you spend money on the real exam;
- it trains your concentration across the whole morning;
- it removes surprises about the format, so on test day your energy goes into answers, not into working out the screen.
How the IELTS Learning mock tests work
We offer 15 complete mock tests for Academic and General Training, each with all four modules. The screens are built to work like the computer-delivered IELTS:
- a visible countdown timer for each section;
- a question navigator so you can jump between questions;
- flag for review, to mark questions you want to return to;
- a highlighter and notes on the Reading passages;
- drag-and-drop answers for matching headings and word-box summaries.
When you finish, Listening and Reading are marked straight away with a band score. Your Writing receives an AI-estimated band for each of the four criteria with feedback, and your Speaking answers get AI feedback on the transcript. Every wrong Listening and Reading answer goes into your Mistake Notebook automatically.
The complete sample mock test is free, with no card needed. Register and it is ready in your dashboard.
Taking a mock under exam conditions at home
A mock is only useful if you treat it like the real thing. Here is a routine that works in a typical Chittagong flat:
- Pick the right time. Choose a morning, often Friday, when the household is calm and you will not be interrupted by visitors.
- Check your connection and charge. Plug in your laptop, and make sure your internet is stable before you begin.
- Use headphones. Street noise from rickshaws, horns and construction can cover a single number in Listening.
- Clear the desk. Phone on silent and out of reach, no dictionary, just water.
- Do the sections in order with only a short break before Speaking, as on test day.
- Hand-write nothing you would not be allowed. If you are taking the paper test, practise on paper too; if computer-delivered, type everything.
Using your results
Your scores are a map, not a verdict. After each mock:
- open the Mistake Notebook and sort your errors by question type. Ten wrong answers in TRUE/FALSE/NOT GIVEN tell you exactly what to practise this week;
- compare your Writing criteria. If Lexical Resource is fine but Coherence and Cohesion is low, work on paragraph planning, not new vocabulary;
- enter your four module bands in the Band Score Calculator to see your likely overall score;
- note your timing. Did you finish Reading Passage 3? Did you spend more than 20 minutes on Task 1?
How many mock tests should you take?
There is no magic number, but a pattern that suits most students is:
- one at the start, to set a baseline;
- one every week or two during your main preparation, with targeted practice sets in between;
- two or three in the final fortnight, at the same time of day as your booked test.
Taking a mock every day is rarely helpful. You need the days between to fix what the mock revealed. A mock taken tired, rushed or half-distracted gives you a misleading score and teaches very little, so quality matters more than quantity. If your Listening and Reading bands stop rising across three mocks, the answer is usually more targeted practice sets, not another full test.
Mocks for the paper or the computer test
In Bangladesh you can usually choose between paper-based and computer-delivered IELTS, but availability changes, so check the official booking websites of the British Council or IDP. Our mock screens copy the computer format. If you are taking the paper test, use the same tests but write your answers on paper, and remember you get 10 minutes to transfer Listening answers instead of 2 minutes to check them.
When you are ready, you can find the free sample and the full set of tests on our practice tests page.
