Who takes IELTS in Chittagong, and why

Chittagong is Bangladesh's port city, and that shapes who sits the test here. A large share of candidates are university students and graduates: people finishing at the University of Chittagong, engineers from CUET, doctors and nurses from the city's medical colleges, and business graduates from the private universities around the city. Many are heading for a master's degree in the UK, a college or university place in Canada, a course in Australia, or a programme in Malaysia, which is popular because it is closer to home.

There is a second group that is easy to forget: working professionals. Chittagong runs on shipping, freight forwarding, garments and export businesses, and staff in these sectors often need IELTS for an overseas posting, a professional qualification or a move with their family. Seafarers and marine engineers trained in the city also take it from time to time.

Academic or General Training?
