Who takes IELTS in Jeddah, and why
Jeddah is a city of very different IELTS candidates. Final-year school students apply to universities in the UK, Australia, Canada and the US. Graduates of King Abdulaziz University, Effat University, Dar Al-Hekma University and the University of Jeddah look at master's programmes overseas. Doctors, nurses and allied health staff, both Saudi and expatriate, need a score for registration or for a move to another country. Engineers and logistics staff linked to the port and the trade economy want to show their English to employers abroad.
Then there are the large expatriate communities: Filipino, Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Egyptian, Sudanese and Indonesian families, many of whom have lived in Jeddah for years and are now planning a move to Canada, Australia, New Zealand or the UK. Each group arrives with different strengths. A Saudi student who studied in English-medium classes may read quickly but find Writing Task 2 hard to organise. A Filipino nurse may speak fluently but lose marks on spelling in Listening. Good IELTS preparation in Jeddah starts by knowing which of these profiles you fit.
Academic or General Training: choose before you study
The two versions share the same Listening and Speaking tests. Reading and Writing differ.
- Academic is for university study and, in many cases, professional registration such as nursing or medicine. Reading uses long, dense academic passages, and Writing Task 1 asks you to describe a chart, table, process or map.
- General Training is mostly used for work and migration. Reading uses everyday and workplace texts, and Writing Task 1 is a letter.
If you are not sure, ask the organisation that will receive your score. Getting this wrong means weeks of practising the wrong Task 1. On IELTS Learning you pick your track when you register, and the practice material follows it.
Fitting preparation into a Jeddah week
Most people in Jeddah prepare for IELTS around something else: lectures at KAU, hospital shifts, long working days near the port, or family life. Long drives on Madinah Road or King Abdulaziz Road eat into the evening, and in the humid summer months nobody wants to cross the city for a class after work.
A realistic plan looks like this:
- Weekday evenings (30–45 minutes): one Listening or Reading set, then review every wrong answer.
- Two longer sessions a week: a Writing task under time, or a Speaking session with the cue-card timer.
- One weekend morning every week or two: a full mock test in one sitting, to build stamina.
Most students need somewhere between six and twelve weeks of steady work, depending on where they start and the score they need.
