Who takes IELTS in Delhi, and why
Delhi sends people abroad for many different reasons, and that changes how you should prepare. Final-year students at Delhi University colleges, IIT Delhi, Jamia Millia Islamia and the colleges affiliated to GGSIPU often sit the Academic test for a master's in the UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland or Germany. Engineers and analysts in the IT and consulting offices of Gurugram and Noida often need General Training for skilled migration to Canada or Australia. Nurses and allied health staff from the city's large hospitals frequently look at registration in the UK, Ireland or Australia, where the score bar is often high in every module.
Each group has a different deadline, a different target band and a different weak spot. A DU literature student may breeze through Reading but struggle with the strict structure of Task 1. A software developer may handle charts easily but freeze in Speaking Part 2. Good IELTS preparation in Delhi starts with being honest about which of these you are.
Academic or General Training: decide this first
The Listening and Speaking tests are the same for both tracks. Reading and Writing are different.
- Academic is usually for university admission and for many professional registrations. Reading uses long academic passages, and Writing Task 1 asks you to describe a chart, table, process or map.
- General Training is usually for work, training or migration. Reading uses everyday, workplace and longer general texts, and Task 1 is a letter.
If you are not sure, check the exact requirement with the university, employer or immigration authority before you book anything. On IELTS Learning you choose your track when you sign up, and every Reading set, Writing prompt and mock follows that choice.
Fitting study into a Delhi day
The hardest part of IELTS preparation in Delhi is often not the English. It is the time. A ride on the Blue Line from Dwarka to Noida, or a crawl through traffic on the Ring Road, can take a large slice of your evening. A few habits make that time useful:
- Use the metro for light work: your vocabulary flashcards, the free Daily Vocabulary words, or a strategy chapter from Study Notes.
- Keep Listening and full mocks for home, with headphones and a closed door. They need quiet and full attention.
- Put one long session at the weekend, when you can sit a full mock in one go.
- Around DU internal exams or a project deadline at work, drop to short daily sessions rather than stopping completely.

A sensible eight-week outline
- Week 1: take the free sample mock under timed conditions and note your band in each module.
- Weeks 2 to 3: work on your weakest module daily, using practice sets and the strategy chapters.
- Weeks 4 to 5: write two Task 2 essays a week and record Speaking answers every other day.
- Week 6: sit a full mock, then clear your Mistake Notebook.
- Week 7: switch to Charged sets if your target is 7 or more, and consider a teacher session for Speaking or Writing.
- Week 8: a final mock, the Quick Wrap checklist and plenty of sleep before test day.
Booking the real test
IELTS is run by the British Council, IDP and Cambridge University Press & Assessment. IELTS Learning is independent and not affiliated with any of them. Test sessions are available in and around Delhi, both computer-delivered and on paper. Book through the official IDP or British Council websites, and check fees and dates there, because they change.
