What 7, 7.5 and 8 actually mean
IELTS bands go from 0 to 9 in half bands. Your overall band is the average of the four modules, rounded to the nearest half band.
Listening and Reading are based on correct answers out of 40:
- Band 7: roughly 30 correct in Listening and roughly 30 in Academic Reading. General Training Reading needs more correct answers for the same band.
- Band 8: you need very few mistakes, typically only a handful across the 40 questions.
Writing and Speaking are assessed on four criteria. At band 7 you:
- answer the task fully, with a clear position and well-developed ideas;
- organise ideas logically, with linking that feels natural rather than mechanical;
- use less common vocabulary with some awareness of style and collocation;
- use a range of complex structures, with frequent error-free sentences.
At band 8, errors are rare and do not affect understanding, and vocabulary is precise and natural.

Typical requirements for Ranchi applicants
Requirements vary widely and change over time, so always check the exact score with the university, regulator or immigration authority. As a general guide:
- Master's degrees in the UK, Ireland or Australia: many universities often ask for 6.5 overall, with 6.0 or more in each module. Competitive courses may ask for 7.0. This is the usual target for engineering graduates from BIT Mesra and IIIT Ranchi, and management graduates from Ranchi University or IIM Ranchi.
- Germany and other European countries: English-taught programmes often ask for around 6.5, though each university sets its own requirement.
- Canada skilled migration: General Training scores are converted to language benchmarks, and higher scores usually earn more points. Many experienced engineers from Ranchi's mining and public-sector organisations aim for high scores in every module for this reason.
- Doctors and nurses: professional regulators abroad often ask for 7.0 or higher in each module, and some ask for 7.5. Doctors from RIMS and nurses from Jharkhand's hospitals should check their regulator's current rules carefully.
If you are an Academic student, you can share your study plans on IELTS Learning and, if you agree, our overseas education advisers can suggest universities and courses that match your target score.
Why many Ranchi candidates stall at 6.5
At band 6, general English and test familiarity carry you a long way. To move beyond 6.5, you need precision. Common reasons people stall:
- Reading: losing two or three marks on NOT GIVEN and Matching Headings in every test.
- Listening: spelling errors and plural slips, which can easily cost a half band.
- Writing: a Task 2 essay that answers the question but does not develop the ideas fully.
- Speaking: fluent Part 1 answers, but short, general Part 3 answers.
Often the gap between 6.5 and IELTS band 7 is not English level but exam technique and consistency across four modules.
A realistic plan from 6 to 7+
Weeks 1 and 2: diagnose
- Take a full mock to find your band in each module.
- Identify your weakest module and your weakest Writing criterion.
Weeks 3 to 6: targeted practice
- Practise one Reading question type per week until your accuracy is consistent.
- Do Listening sets with a list of the words you misspell.
- Write two Task 2 essays a week, using criterion feedback to focus on your lowest criterion.
- Practise Part 3 answers with reasons, examples and a contrasting view.
Weeks 7 to 10: push and measure
- Move to Charged sets: harder Listening and Reading designed for band 7+ students.
- Take a full mock every week.
- Book a teacher session to check your Writing and Speaking against the band 7 descriptors.
Using Charged sets wisely
Charged sets use harder passages, faster speech and closer distractors. They are not for beginners; use them once you are scoring around 28 or more on standard sets. If your score drops at first, that is expected. Review every mistake: they show you exactly what separates band 7 from band 8.
