What 7, 7.5 and 8 look like in each module
Bands are given in half steps from 0 to 9. Your overall score is the average of the four modules, rounded to the nearest half band. Here is roughly what the higher bands mean in practice:
- Listening: band 7 typically needs about 30 out of 40 correct; band 8 needs roughly 35 or more. At these levels you rarely lose marks on spelling or plurals.
- Reading: in Academic, band 7 is roughly 30 out of 40, and band 8 needs mid-30s. General Training needs more correct answers for the same bands.
- Writing: a 7 means you answer every part of the question, with a clear position, logical paragraphs, some less common vocabulary used correctly, and frequent error-free sentences. An 8 means errors are rare and your argument is fully developed.
- Speaking: a 7 means you speak at length without noticeable effort, use some idiomatic language, and are easy to understand, even with an accent. An 8 means you are fluent with only occasional hesitation for ideas, not for words.
Writing and Speaking are usually the modules holding students back, because they need active skill rather than recognition.
Where Siliguri students are heading, and the scores often asked
Siliguri draws students and workers from across North Bengal, the hills, Sikkim and the North-East, and their plans vary. Requirements change and differ by institution, so treat these as typical ranges only and always check the exact figure:
- Nursing registration in the UK, Ireland, Australia or New Zealand often asks for a high overall score, commonly around 7 overall with minimums in each module, and some routes are stricter on Writing. Check with the relevant nursing council.
- Master's degrees in the UK often ask for 6.0 to 7.0 overall, with higher requirements for subjects such as law, medicine and teaching.
- Universities in Australia, Canada and New Zealand often ask for 6.5 overall with no module below 6.0, though some courses ask more.
- Skilled migration routes often award more points for higher scores, so 7 or 8 in each module can make a real difference. Check the immigration authority's current rules.
If you are a University of North Bengal graduate or a nurse from Darjeeling, Kalimpong or Sikkim, the important number is usually your lowest module, not your overall band.
From 6 to 7+: a realistic plan
A full band usually takes weeks of steady work, not days. A ten-week plan for a student at around 6 overall:
- Week 1: take a full mock. Identify your two lowest modules and the question types where you lose most marks.
- Weeks 2 to 4: daily focused practice on the weakest module. Write two Task 2 essays a week and rewrite one using the feedback. Record Speaking every day.
- Weeks 5 to 7: add a full mock every week. Start the Charged sets in your stronger receptive module. Book a teacher session to review Writing or Speaking.
- Weeks 8 to 9: Charged sets in both Listening and Reading. Work on precision: paraphrase, collocation and complex sentences used accurately.
- Week 10: two final mocks spaced apart, the Quick Wrap checklist, and rest before test day.
Students who already work in English, such as many nurses in private hospitals, often move faster in Speaking. Students whose daily life is mainly in Bengali, Nepali or Hindi may need extra listening and reading in English to reach the speed band 7 demands.
Charged sets: practice that stretches you
Once you score consistently around band 7 on our regular sets, ordinary practice stops being enough. Charged sets are harder Listening and Reading sets built for students aiming at 7 and above: denser passages, closer paraphrase, more convincing distractors and faster speakers.
Use them carefully. If you score much lower on Charged sets, that is normal. Review every wrong answer in the Mistake Notebook and look for the pattern: usually it is paraphrase you did not recognise, or a distractor that repeated a word from the question.
Signs you are ready for an 8 band attempt
- You score 7.5 or more on three consecutive full mocks.
- Your Writing feedback shows no criterion below 7.
- You can speak for the full 2 minutes on unfamiliar cue cards without long pauses.
