What band 7, 7.5 and 8 actually mean
An IELTS band 7 describes a "good user" of English: you handle complex language well, with occasional inaccuracies. Band 8 is a "very good user", with only rare errors. Here is roughly what that looks like in each module.
- Listening: about 30/40 for band 7, around 32–34 for 7.5 and 35 or more for 8. At this level, a few spelling slips can cost you half a band.
- Reading: in Academic, about 30/40 for 7 and around 35 for 8. General Training needs more correct answers for the same band.
- Writing: at 7, you answer every part of the task with a clear position, organise ideas logically and use a range of vocabulary and complex sentences, with many error-free sentences. At 8, errors are rare and ideas are fully developed.
- Speaking: at 7, you speak at length without noticeable effort, using some less common vocabulary and idiom, with mostly accurate grammar. At 8, you are fluent with only occasional hesitation and very flexible vocabulary.
Your overall band is the average of the four, rounded to the nearest half band. Many requirements also set a minimum for each module, which is often the harder part.
Typical requirements for destinations popular in Dubai
People in Dubai aim at a wide spread of destinations. Requirements vary between institutions and change over time, so treat these as general patterns and always check the exact requirement with the university, employer, regulator or immigration authority.
- UK universities: often ask for 6.0–7.0 overall for postgraduate courses, with higher scores for subjects like law, medicine or journalism.
- Australian and New Zealand universities: typically 6.5 overall, often with no module below 6.0, and higher for some programmes.
- Canadian universities: often 6.5 overall, sometimes 7.0 for competitive programmes.
- Health professionals: many nursing and medical regulators in English-speaking countries ask for 7.0 or higher, often in every module.
- Skilled migration (General Training): points-based systems in Canada and Australia often give more credit for higher scores, so many candidates aim for 7 or 8 in each module even if a lower score is the minimum.
Who is chasing band 7 in Dubai
The candidates here tend to be strong English users who are just short of target: nurses from the Philippines, Kerala and elsewhere working in Dubai's hospitals and clinics, engineers and IT staff in the free zones preparing General Training for Canada or Australia, and graduates from Academic City and Knowledge Park campuses applying for master's degrees. A common story is 7.5 in Listening and Reading, but 6.5 in Writing. That single module is usually where the work is.
A realistic plan from 6 to 7+
Ten to twelve weeks is a realistic target for most people starting at a solid 6.0–6.5, studying around an hour a day.
- Weeks 1–2: diagnose. Take a full mock and convert your scores with the Band Score Calculator. Read your Writing criterion bands and Speaking transcript carefully.
- Weeks 3–5: fix the weakest module. If it is Writing, write two Task 2 essays and one Task 1 a week, and rewrite paragraphs using the feedback. If it is Speaking, practise Part 3 daily and record yourself.
- Weeks 6–8: raise the difficulty. Move to the Charged Listening and Reading sets. They are built for students aiming at 7+, with tougher passages and closer distractors.
- Weeks 9–10: test and refine. Take a full mock every week. Book a 1-to-1 teacher session to check Writing or Speaking against band 7 standards.
- Final week: one last mock, the Quick Wrap checklist and rest.
Why Charged sets matter at this level
Standard practice sets are good for building technique, but once you score 30+ regularly they stop showing you your weak points. The Charged Listening and Reading sets push harder: faster speech, denser passages and answer options designed to catch you out. Getting used to that pressure makes the real test feel easier.
