What band 7, 7.5 and 8 actually mean
Bands are given in half points from 0 to 9. A 7 describes a "good user" who handles complex language well with occasional mistakes. In practice, that means something specific in each module.
- Listening: band 7 needs roughly 30 out of 40; band 8 needs around 35. You can afford very few spelling slips.
- Academic Reading: band 7 is roughly 30 out of 40, band 8 around 35. General Training Reading needs more correct answers for the same band.
- Writing: band 7 means fully answering the question with clear, developed ideas, logical paragraphs, a range of vocabulary used precisely, and frequent error-free sentences. Band 8 adds very few errors and more natural, flexible language.
- Speaking: band 7 means you speak at length without noticeable effort, use some less common vocabulary and idiomatic language, and are easy to understand. Band 8 is fluent, with only occasional hesitation.
Your overall score is the average of the four modules, rounded to the nearest half band. Use the Band Score Calculator to see how different combinations work out.
Typical requirements for Dhaka students' destinations
Students from Dhaka apply widely, and requirements vary by institution, course and route. These are typical ranges only; always check the exact figure with the university, employer or authority.
- UK: many universities often ask for 6.0 to 7.0 overall, with competitive courses such as law, medicine and some business programmes often asking for 7.0 or more, plus minimums in each module.
- Canada: many universities often ask for 6.5 overall with no module below 6.0, and some graduate programmes ask for 7.0.
- Australia: universities typically ask for 6.5 overall, with higher figures for teaching, nursing and some postgraduate courses.
- USA: universities that accept IELTS often look for around 6.5 to 7.0, varying by programme.
- Nursing and healthcare: professional registration in English-speaking countries often requires a high score in every module, sometimes 7.0 each. Nurses trained in Dhaka should check the current rule with the relevant regulator.

Why students in Dhaka get stuck at 6.5
The jump from 6.5 to 7 is where many good students, including those from DU, BUET, NSU and BRAC, find progress slows. Common reasons:
- Reading and Listening: losing three or four marks to NOT GIVEN, spelling or plurals.
- Writing: ideas that are listed rather than developed, and vocabulary that is safe but general.
- Speaking: answers that are accurate but short, or that rely on prepared phrases.
More of the same practice does not fix these. Targeted, harder practice does.
A realistic plan from 6 to 7+
Most students need around eight to twelve weeks of steady work to move a full band, though it varies.
- Week 1: take a full mock test. Note your band and raw score in each module, and the gap to your target.
- Weeks 2–4: daily Listening or Reading sets (one a day), three Task 2 essays a week with criterion feedback, and Speaking out loud for 15 minutes daily.
- Weeks 5–8: move to Charged sets for Listening and Reading once you score around 28–30 out of 40. Rewrite your weakest Writing paragraphs using the feedback. Book a 1-to-1 teacher session for Speaking.
- Weeks 9–12: a full mock every week, careful review in the Mistake Notebook, and a final teacher session for Writing or Speaking.
What Charged sets are for
Charged sets are harder Listening and Reading sets designed for students aiming at band 7 and above. Expect faster speech, more distractors, closer paraphrasing and denser passages. If you can score well on Charged sets, the real test usually feels more comfortable.
Making time in a Dhaka week
Band 7 preparation needs focus. If you study at university or work in Gulshan, Banani or Motijheel, protect one hour each evening and a longer block on your day off for a mock or essays. Use commute time on the Metro Rail or in traffic for vocabulary and reading, not for scored Listening.
Full Access gives you 15 mock tests, Charged sets, Writing and Speaking feedback and the rest of the platform for $12 for 2 months. Teacher sessions start at $5 and are booked separately. Start with the free sample mock test to find your true starting point.
