What band 7, 7.5 and 8 look like
Your overall band is the average of the four modules, rounded to the nearest half band. Here is roughly what higher scores mean in each module.
Listening and Reading
- Band 7: roughly 30 correct answers out of 40 in Listening and Academic Reading. General Training Reading needs more.
- Band 7.5: around 32–34 correct.
- Band 8: around 35–36 correct.
At this level, every mark counts. A misspelt word or a missing plural can be the difference between 7 and 7.5.
Writing
- Band 7: you answer the question fully, with a clear position, logical paragraphs and a good range of vocabulary, including some less common words, with only occasional errors.
- Band 8: ideas are well developed and supported, errors are rare and vocabulary is used naturally and precisely.
Speaking
- Band 7: you speak at length without noticeable effort, use some idiomatic language, and make occasional errors that do not affect understanding.
- Band 8: you speak fluently with only rare hesitation, use a wide range of vocabulary flexibly and are easy to understand throughout.
Typical score requirements for popular destinations
Students and professionals in Manama aim at a fairly consistent set of destinations. Requirements change and differ by institution and purpose, so treat these as typical ranges only and always check the exact requirement with the university, employer or authority.
- UK universities: many ask for 6.0–7.0 overall, often with minimums in each module. Competitive courses such as law, medicine and some master's programmes often ask for 7.0 or more.
- Ireland: a common choice for Bahraini students, especially in medicine and health; universities often ask for 6.5–7.0.
- Canada and Australia: universities often ask for 6.5 overall. For migration and professional purposes, requirements vary widely and are set by the authorities concerned, so check the official sources.
- Nursing and medical registration: professional bodies in the UK, Australia and elsewhere often require high scores, typically 7.0 or above in each module. This is why many of Manama's nurses and doctors aim for 7 across the board, not just overall.
Why getting from 6 to 7 feels hard
Moving from 5.5 to 6 is often about understanding the test. Moving from 6 to 7 is about precision. Students in Bahrain's finance and healthcare sectors often have good working English but lose marks through:
- small, repeated grammar errors in Writing;
- general, safe vocabulary instead of precise words;
- Task 2 essays that drift away from the question;
- Speaking answers that are fluent but short and undeveloped;
- careless spelling in Listening and Reading.
A realistic plan from 6 to 7+
The timeline below assumes you are currently scoring around 6 to 6.5 and can study about an hour on weekdays plus a longer session on Saturday.
Weeks 1–2: diagnose
- Take a full mock test under exam conditions.
- Record every wrong answer in Listening and Reading; the Mistake Notebook does this automatically.
- Submit one Task 1 and one Task 2 for AI feedback and note your weakest criterion.
- Record three Speaking cue cards and read the feedback.
Weeks 3–6: fix the biggest gap
- Spend half your time on your weakest module.
- In Writing, rewrite each essay after feedback instead of always starting new ones.
- In Speaking, focus on extending Part 3 answers with reasons, examples and comparisons.
- Book a 1-to-1 teacher session, from $5, to get a human view of your Writing or Speaking.
Weeks 7–8: move up to Charged practice
Once you are regularly hitting 28–30 in Listening and Reading, switch to Charged sets. These harder Listening and Reading sets have more difficult texts, faster audio and stronger distractors. If you can score well on them, the real test should feel more manageable.
Final fortnight: rehearse
- Take one or two full mocks under exam conditions, on a Saturday morning if possible.
- Review the Quick Wrap checklist.
- Rest well the night before. Avoid a late drive back over the causeway if your test is the next morning.
Is band 8 realistic?
For candidates who already have strong English, yes. Band 8 Listening and Reading require near-perfect accuracy, and band 8 Writing needs essays that are fully developed with very few errors. Charged sets, careful review and expert feedback can all help, but there are no shortcuts, and nobody can honestly guarantee a band.
