What classroom coaching does well
A good classroom course gives you structure. Someone tells you what to do on Monday, you sit beside other students with the same goal, and a teacher hears you speak. For students who find it hard to start on their own, that routine is valuable.
Classroom batches also suit people who learn by listening to explanations and asking questions face to face. If you have never seen an IELTS paper before, a few guided sessions can make the format less intimidating.
The limits are just as real. A batch moves at one speed, so a student aiming for band 6 and one aiming for 8 get the same lesson. Speaking time per person is often short when there are many students in the room. And timings are fixed, which is hard if your shifts change.
What self-paced online practice does better
Online practice is strongest at volume and feedback. On IELTS Learning you can attempt a Reading passage at 6 a.m., see exactly why each answer is right or wrong, and have your mistakes saved automatically to the Mistake Notebook for review later.
- Practice at your level: standard sets to build accuracy, Charged sets when you are ready for band 7+ material.
- Real exam screens: 15 full mocks with the timer, navigator, highlighter and flag-for-review tools of the computer-delivered test.
- Feedback on demand: AI-estimated bands for Writing on all four criteria, and AI feedback on your Speaking transcripts.
- A human when you need one: Book a Teacher gives you about 20 minutes one-to-one online, from ₹299.
What online practice cannot do is make you log in. If you need someone waiting for you at 5 p.m., build that into your plan with booked teacher sessions.
The Ranchi commute factor
Ranchi has no metro. Most students and professionals get around by auto, e-rickshaw, bus, scooter or car, and the main corridors such as Main Road, Kanke Road, Ratu Road and the Lalpur and Kokar stretches can be slow at peak hours. A student living in a hostel at Mesra, well outside the city centre, can spend a long time on the road for a one-hour evening class.
Add it up honestly. If a round trip to a class takes an hour, five classes a week cost you five hours of travel, plus fuel or fares. Those hours could be two full mock tests and a Writing task with feedback. During the monsoon, when roads are wet and traffic slows, the gap grows.
For PSU and corporate staff working fixed hours in Doranda, Hinoo or Kanke Road, the question is simply whether an evening class is realistic after the drive home.
Who each option suits
Classroom coaching may suit you if:
- you are starting from scratch and want a guided introduction to the test;
- you struggle to study alone and need a fixed timetable;
- you live close to wherever the classes are held.
Online practice plus teacher sessions may suit you if:
- you already have decent English and need targeted practice;
- your college timetable, shifts or office hours change;
- you want far more timed practice than a batch can offer;
- you want a teacher's ear for Speaking and Writing, but not every day.
How to combine them
Plenty of students do both. A common pattern is to attend a short classroom course for the basics, then use online mocks and practice sets for the volume a class cannot give. Another is to skip classes entirely and book a teacher session every week or two, using the time for Speaking practice or a detailed look at one Writing task.
What to look for in any IELTS course
Ask these questions of any course, whether it is classroom IELTS coaching or an online platform, including ours:
- Are the practice tests in the current official format, timed and in the right order?
- Will you get feedback on Writing against all four criteria, not just a single band?
- How much individual Speaking practice will you actually get each week?
- Is there separate material for Academic and General Training?
- Are the claims honest? Be wary of anyone who guarantees a band score.
