Two ways to prepare, both valid
There is no single right answer. Some students in Mangaluru do well in a classroom batch; others prefer to practise alone and get targeted help when they need it. What matters is how much real test practice you do and how good the feedback is.
IELTS Learning is not a coaching centre. It is an online platform with full mock tests, module practice, AI feedback and optional 1-to-1 sessions with an IELTS teacher. Here is how the two approaches compare.
Classroom coaching: who it suits
A good classroom course gives you structure, a fixed time each week and a teacher in the room.
- It suits students who struggle to study without a timetable set by someone else.
- It helps if your spoken English needs a lot of live correction and you enjoy group discussion.
- Batches move at the group's pace, so you may spend time on modules you are already strong in.
- Class times are fixed. If you are on night duty at a hospital or have a lab in the afternoon, you may miss sessions.
Online practice plus teacher sessions: who it suits
This approach puts the practice volume on the platform and keeps human feedback for where it counts most.
- You practise when you are free: early morning before college, between clinical postings, or late at night in the hostel.
- You spend more time on your weak module. If Reading is already at 7.5 and Writing is at 6, your hours go to Writing.
- AI feedback on Writing and Speaking is instant, so you can try a task, read the comments and rewrite the same day.
- When you want a human view, you book a 1-to-1 session of about 20 minutes from ₹299, often for Speaking practice or a Writing review.
The trade-off is self-discipline. Nobody will call you if you skip a week, so a personal study plan and a fixed daily slot matter.
The Mangaluru factor: time on the road
Mangaluru is compact on a map but slow in practice. Private buses are frequent, yet the trip from Surathkal or Konaje to Hampankatta, or from Deralakatte to Kadri, can easily take 45 minutes each way at peak hours. During the monsoon it can take longer.
If a class is three evenings a week, that is several hours a week spent commuting. Over two months, those hours could cover several full mock tests and a dozen Writing tasks. Online practice removes the commute cost and the bus fare, and it means a heavy downpour does not cancel your study session.
Many students from Udupi, Puttur, Bantwal, Moodbidri and Kasaragod study in Mangalore and go home at weekends. An online plan travels with you, so your preparation does not stop on Friday evening.
How to combine the two
You do not have to choose only one. A combination that works for many students:
- Use the platform daily for Listening and Reading practice, which are the modules where volume improves your score fastest.
- Write two or three Task 2 essays a week, read the AI feedback on all four criteria, and rewrite one.
- Record Speaking answers using the cue-card timer and review the transcript feedback.
- Book a teacher session every week or two for live Speaking practice, or join a short classroom course if you want a group.
- Take a full mock test every weekend in the final month.
What to look for in any IELTS course
Whether you pay for classroom coaching or an online programme, ask these questions:
- Is the practice in the real format? Many candidates now sit the computer-delivered test, so practise on screens with a timer, navigator and highlighter.
- Is there feedback on Writing and Speaking against the four official criteria? A general comment like "good essay" does not help you move a band.
- Can you track your mistakes? Our Mistake Notebook saves every wrong answer so you can review patterns.
- Is the course honest about results? Be wary of anyone who promises a guaranteed band. No one can.
- Does it match your track? Academic and General Training differ in Reading and Writing Task 1.
