IELTS Study Notes and Free Practice Material for Doha Students

Doha students are rarely short of IELTS material; phones fill up with PDFs, screenshots and forwarded voice notes. The harder part is knowing which material is accurate, and turning it into a weekly routine you can keep.

  • 15 full mock tests
  • 88 Listening and 52 Reading practice sets
  • AI band feedback on Writing and Speaking
  • 1-to-1 teacher sessions from $5

What good IELTS study notes look like

Good notes are short, accurate and built around the test, not around grammar for its own sake. Whether you write your own or use a ready-made set, check that they:

  • Explain the task first. What does this question type actually test? What does the examiner want to see?
  • Give a clear method. For example, for Matching Headings: read the headings, read each paragraph's first and last sentences, decide the main idea, match.
  • Show common traps. Every question type has a few predictable ways to lose marks.
  • Match your module. Academic Writing Task 1 notes are useless to a General Training candidate.
  • Use correct, current information about timing and format.

Be careful with material forwarded through messaging groups. Much of it is outdated, copied from unofficial sources, or based on rumours about what examiners "always" ask. If a note promises a secret trick or a guaranteed band, ignore it.

Our Study Notes and practice material

IELTS Learning's Study Notes contain strategy chapters for each module, written for the current test format. They explain question types, timing and common errors in plain English, and they link directly to practice so you can try a method straight away.

Alongside the notes, Full Access gives you:

  • 88 Listening sets and 52 Reading sets with explanations;
  • 104 Writing prompts and 186 Speaking prompts with AI feedback;
  • 15 full mock tests on computer-style screens;
  • English Improvement lessons on grammar and vocabulary;
  • spaced-repetition flashcards that bring back words just before you forget them;
  • a Mistake Notebook that saves every wrong answer automatically, so your notes build themselves;
  • a personal study plan based on your target band and test date.

Full Access is $12 for 2 months, paid once by card in US dollars.

Using Cambridge IELTS practice books alongside our tests

Many students in Doha also use the official Cambridge IELTS practice books, and that is a sensible choice. They are produced by one of the organisations that owns IELTS and are a reliable reference for the test.

The challenge is that each book contains only a handful of tests, and many students use them up quickly. A good approach is:

  1. Use our tests and practice sets for most of your preparation, especially to work on specific question types and get feedback.
  2. Save a few official Cambridge tests for checkpoints, perhaps one a month, to confirm your progress on official material.
  3. Remember the format differs. The books are printed, while computer-delivered IELTS is on screen. If you are taking the computer test, also practise on our computer-style mocks.

Our tests follow the same official format, question types and timing, but they are our own material. IELTS Learning is independent of the British Council, IDP and Cambridge University Press & Assessment.

A weekly study routine for Doha

Here is a routine that fits a typical working week in Doha, whether your days off are Friday and Saturday or fall elsewhere because of shifts.

  • Every day (10 minutes): Daily Vocabulary and flashcards, on the Metro or during a break.
  • Weekday 1: Study Notes chapter plus one Reading set.
  • Weekday 2: one Listening set with headphones, then review mistakes.
  • Weekday 3: one Task 2 essay; read the AI feedback.
  • Weekday 4: Speaking prompts: record, read the transcript, repeat.
  • Weekday 5: Mistake Notebook review and a Task 1.
  • Day off: a full mock test every week or two; otherwise a timed Writing paper.

Keep your materials organised

One folder of trusted material beats fifty forwarded PDFs. Keep your Study Notes, your Mistake Notebook and one official practice book. Delete the rest.

It also helps to keep a single page of personal notes for the final week: the ten words you always misspell, the two grammar errors you keep making, your timing plan for Reading and the opening line you will use to calm yourself in Speaking Part 2. Read it on the Metro the day before your test, alongside the Quick Wrap checklist, and then stop studying and rest. Register free to start with the free mock and Daily Vocabulary today.

Questions from students in Doha

Where can I find free IELTS practice material in Doha?

IELTS Learning offers a free complete sample mock test, free sample Listening and Reading sets, Daily Vocabulary, a Band Score Calculator, the Quick Wrap checklist and a weekly blog. Everything is online, so you do not need to visit anywhere in the city.

Are the Cambridge IELTS books enough on their own?

They are excellent official practice, but each book contains a limited number of tests and no feedback on your Writing or Speaking. Most students benefit from combining them with more practice and feedback.

Are IELTS PDFs shared on messaging groups reliable?

Some are useful, but many are outdated, inaccurate or copied from unofficial sources. Check that any material matches the current test format and your module before relying on it.

How should I organise my IELTS study notes?

Keep one set of notes per module, organised by question type, and add your own mistakes as you practise. Our Mistake Notebook does this automatically by saving every wrong answer.

How much time should I study each week while working in Doha?

Around five to seven hours a week is realistic for most working people, split into short daily sessions and one longer block on your day off. Consistency over two to three months matters more than the total.
