What good IELTS notes look like
Plenty of free IELTS study material circulates on office WhatsApp groups and Telegram channels in Gurugram. Some of it is useful; much of it is outdated or simply wrong. Before you rely on any notes, check them against these points:
- They match the current test format. Timings, number of questions and question types should be correct. Notes that still describe old formats can mislead you.
- They explain strategy, not just tricks. "Always pick the longest option" is a myth. Good notes explain why an answer is right.
- They are specific to your module. Academic and General Training differ in Reading and Writing Task 1.
- They come with practice. A strategy you have not tested under a timer is just theory.
- They avoid memorised templates. Lists of "band 9 phrases" for essays tend to hurt more than help.
Quality matters more than quantity. One well-organised set of notes plus regular timed practice beats a folder of 40 PDFs you never open.
Our Study Notes
IELTS Learning's Study Notes are strategy chapters for each module, written to match the official format:
- Listening: predicting answers in the reading time, tracking question order, maps and plans, spelling and numbers.
- Reading: skimming and scanning, TRUE/FALSE/NOT GIVEN logic, Matching Headings, managing the hour.
- Writing: Task 1 overviews and selection, GT letter tone, Task 2 essay structures, how the four criteria work.
- Speaking: extending Part 1 answers, planning a cue card in one minute, developing ideas in Part 3.
Alongside these, English Improvement covers grammar and vocabulary, spaced-repetition flashcards bring back words just before you would forget them, and the Quick Wrap checklist gives you a last-minute review for the final days. Your Mistake Notebook becomes your most personal study material of all, because it collects every question you got wrong automatically.

Using Cambridge IELTS books alongside our tests
Many Gurugram students and professionals also use the official Cambridge IELTS practice books, and that is a sensible choice. They contain authentic past test material. Our tests follow the same official format, so the two work well together:
- Use the Cambridge books on paper if you are taking the paper-based test, or for offline practice at home.
- Use our mocks for computer-delivered practice: typing essays, using the highlighter, the navigator and drag-and-drop.
- Use our explanations and Mistake Notebook to understand your errors, since the books give answers but limited explanation.
- Save a few official tests for the final weeks so you have unseen material close to test day.
IELTS Learning is independent and not affiliated with Cambridge University Press & Assessment, the British Council or IDP.
A weekly study routine for a Gurugram working week
This routine assumes about seven hours a week, which most working candidates can find with planning.
- Monday (30 min): read one Study Notes chapter on the commute and do 10 minutes of flashcards.
- Tuesday (40 min): one timed Reading passage, then review every explanation.
- Wednesday (40 min): one Listening part with headphones; add mistakes to your review list.
- Thursday (40 min): one Writing Task 1, plus planning two Task 2 essays.
- Friday (20 min): three recorded Speaking answers with transcript feedback.
- Saturday (2–3 hours): a full mock or a full Reading and Writing session.
- Sunday (45 min): go through your Mistake Notebook and plan next week.
On the Rapid Metro or a cab down Golf Course Road, use your phone for notes, vocabulary and reviews; keep timed work for a desk.
