What good IELTS study notes look like
Plenty of IELTS material is passed around Surat on WhatsApp groups and college photocopies. Some is helpful; much of it is outdated, inaccurate or built around memorised answers. Good IELTS study notes share a few features:
- They match the current test format: Listening with 4 parts and 40 questions, Reading with 3 passages in 60 minutes, Writing Task 1 and Task 2, Speaking in 3 parts.
- They teach a method, not just answers: how to approach Matching Headings, how to plan a Task 2 essay in five minutes, how to extend a Part 3 answer.
- They keep Academic and General Training separate where they differ.
- They are short enough to use. A one-page strategy you actually revise beats a hundred-page file you never open.
- They avoid memorised scripts. Examiners recognise them, and they often lower your score.
What makes practice material worth your time
Notes explain; practice builds the skill. When choosing free IELTS practice material or paid sets, check that:
- Tests follow the official timings and question types.
- Answers come with explanations, so you learn why, not just what.
- There is a way to practise on a computer-style screen, since most candidates now take the computer-delivered test.
- Writing and Speaking come with feedback based on the four official criteria.
- You can track your mistakes over time rather than starting fresh every day.
Our Study Notes and tools
On IELTS Learning, the Study Notes section has strategy chapters for each module: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. They are written to be read in one sitting and then applied straight away in practice.
Alongside them you will find:
- English Improvement lessons on grammar and vocabulary, useful if your schooling was in Gujarati medium and you want to strengthen the basics.
- Spaced-repetition flashcards that bring back words just before you would forget them.
- The Mistake Notebook, which saves every wrong answer automatically so your weak points become your revision list.
- A personal study plan based on your test date and target band.
- The Quick Wrap checklist for the last days before the test.
Free with no card
- A complete free sample mock test with all four sections, on the practice tests page.
- Free sample Listening and Reading practice sets.
- Daily Vocabulary: five new words a day.
- The Band Score Calculator.
- The Quick Wrap tips and our weekly tips on the blog.
Full Access, at ₹999 for 2 months, adds 15 mocks, 88 Listening sets, 52 Reading sets, 104 Writing prompts and 186 Speaking prompts.
Using Cambridge IELTS books alongside our tests
Many students in Surat also use the official Cambridge IELTS practice books, and they are a good resource. Our tests follow the same official format, so the two work well together.
- Use a Cambridge IELTS practice test as an occasional paper-based benchmark, especially if you are taking the paper test.
- Use our computer-style mocks for screen practice, instant Listening and Reading scores, and AI feedback on Writing and Speaking.
- Do not redo the same book test repeatedly; once you know the answers, it no longer measures your level.
- Keep one notebook, or the Mistake Notebook, for errors from both sources, so you see the full pattern.
- Never copy model answers from any book into your own notes as scripts to memorise. Note the structure and useful phrases, then write your own version.
A Surat student's study week
IELTS study material in Surat is easy to find; the routine is the hard part. Here is a sample week for someone with college or work during the day. Adjust it around shop hours, shifts or family commitments.
- Monday: one Listening section plus Daily Vocabulary. Review errors.
- Tuesday: one Reading passage, timed. Read one Study Notes chapter on that question type.
- Wednesday: one Task 2 essay with AI feedback.
- Thursday: Speaking: three Part 1 questions and one cue card with the timer. Read your transcript.
- Friday: Task 1 (a chart or a letter) and English Improvement for twenty minutes.
- Saturday: a full mock test, or two full modules if a full mock is not possible.
- Sunday: light review: Mistake Notebook, flashcards and one blog post. Rest.
If you commute by bus or BRTS across the city, keep flashcards and Daily Vocabulary for the ride, and save timed work for home where you can concentrate.
