What classroom coaching in Kathmandu does well
A good classroom course gives you structure. There is a fixed time, a teacher who notices when you go quiet, and classmates who are as nervous as you are. For some people that routine is exactly what keeps them going.
Classes also help when:
- You need someone to explain the test format from scratch.
- You find it hard to study alone after a long day.
- You want regular face-to-face Speaking practice with other people.
The weaknesses are just as real. Batches move at one pace, so a strong reader sits through Reading lessons they do not need while a weak writer gets too little feedback. Practice papers are sometimes old photocopies, and Writing corrections can take a week to come back.
Where self-paced online practice is stronger
Online practice lets you spend your time exactly where your score is weakest. If Listening is already 7.5 and Writing is 6.0, you can spend most of your week on Writing instead of following a fixed timetable.
On IELTS Learning that means:
- Practising on screens like the computer-delivered test, with a timer, navigator, highlighter and flag-for-review.
- Instant Listening and Reading scores, and every wrong answer saved to the Mistake Notebook.
- AI-estimated Writing bands across all four criteria, within minutes rather than days.
- Speaking practice with real timers, including the 1-minute preparation and 2-minute talk for cue cards, with AI feedback on your transcript.
What online practice cannot do on its own is sit across from you and react to how you speak. That is why we offer Book a Teacher: roughly 20-minute 1-to-1 online sessions with an IELTS teacher, from $5, for Speaking practice or Writing feedback.
Who each approach suits
Classroom coaching may suit you if you are starting from a low level, you need an outside routine, or you learn best by talking things through in a group.
Online coaching and self-study may suit you if you already know the format, your weak areas are clear, your hours are irregular (night shifts, field work, final-year projects), or you live far from the coaching hubs.
Many students in the valley end up doing both, at different stages.
Combining the two without wasting effort
- Take a free full mock first to get an honest starting band.
- If you join a class, use it for explanation and group Speaking, and use online sets for timed practice at home.
- Use AI Writing feedback for volume, then book a teacher session when you want a person to look at your best two or three essays.
- In the last fortnight, take full mocks under exam conditions rather than adding more lessons.
What to look for in any IELTS course
Whether you are comparing classroom batches in Kathmandu or online coaching, ask the same questions:
- Does it use the current test format? Computer-delivered IELTS looks different from the paper test. Practise on the format you will sit.
- How quickly is Writing marked, and against which criteria? Feedback should refer to Task Achievement or Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy.
- How much real Speaking time do you get? Count the minutes you actually speak, not the minutes you sit in the room.
- Are the promises believable? Nobody can guarantee a band score. Be wary of anyone who does.
- Can you try before paying? A free sample is a fair request.
Time and money: the commute question
Kathmandu traffic is not a small factor. A daily class across the valley can mean an hour or more each way on a microbus or scooter, plus dust in the dry season and flooded roads in the monsoon. Over a two-month course that adds up to many hours you could have spent practising.
Online coaching removes that. A student in Kirtipur can finish a Listening set in the time it would take to reach Ratnapark. Full Access to IELTS Learning costs $12 for 2 months, paid once by card in US dollars through PayPal, and you add teacher sessions only when you want them.
You do not need to decide everything today. Register free, take the sample mock, and see what your scores tell you. Whatever you choose, the right IELTS coaching is the one that puts most of your hours into the modules that are holding your band down.
