IELTS Writing Practice in Jammu: Task 1, Task 2 and Real Feedback

Writing is the module where most students in Jammu find their band stuck at 6.0 or 6.5. The good news is that the reasons are usually specific and fixable. This page explains what examiners look for and how to practise IELTS Writing Task 1 and Task 2 with useful feedback.

  • 15 full mock tests
  • 88 Listening and 52 Reading practice sets
  • AI band feedback on Writing and Speaking
  • 1-to-1 teacher sessions from ₹299

The Writing test at a glance

You have 60 minutes for two tasks.

  • Task 1 needs at least 150 words. In Academic, you describe a chart, graph, table, process or map. In General Training, you write a letter, which may be formal, semi-formal or informal.
  • Task 2 needs at least 250 words. Everyone writes an essay responding to a point of view, argument or problem.

Task 2 counts for more of your Writing band than Task 1, so most students spend about 20 minutes on Task 1 and 40 minutes on Task 2.

The four criteria

Both tasks are marked on four criteria of equal weight:

  1. Task Achievement (Task 1) or Task Response (Task 2): did you answer the question fully and appropriately?
  2. Coherence and Cohesion: is your writing logically organised, with clear paragraphs and natural linking?
  3. Lexical Resource: do you use a range of vocabulary accurately and appropriately?
  4. Grammatical Range and Accuracy: do you use a variety of sentence structures with few errors?

Knowing which criterion is pulling you down changes how you should practise. Our AI feedback gives an estimated band for each one separately.

Common mistakes Indian students make

These are not criticisms. They are habits that come from school writing, exam culture and everyday Indian English, and examiners notice them.

Memorised phrases

Opening lines like "In this modern era of science and technology" or "This is a burning issue in today's world" are easy to spot. They add words but no meaning, and examiners are trained to discount memorised language. Write a direct sentence about the actual topic instead.

Over-long introductions

A Task 2 introduction needs two or three sentences: paraphrase the question and state your position. Students often write six or seven, leaving too little time for the body paragraphs where the marks really are.

Indian-English usage

Some expressions are common in India but are not standard in international English:

  • "revert back" should be "reply" or "get back to you";
  • "discuss about" should be "discuss" (no "about");
  • "do the needful" should be replaced with what you actually want done;
  • "pass out of college" means to faint; say "graduate";
  • "prepone" is not widely understood; say "bring forward".

Not answering every part of the question

If a question asks "Why is this happening and what can be done?", you need both causes and solutions. Missing one part caps your Task Response score.

In Task 1, giving opinions

Academic Task 1 is a description. Do not explain why sales rose or say whether a trend is good. Report the main features and compare the data.

IELTS Writing practice in Jammu: what helps locally

Students across the Jammu division write a lot in their degrees, but usually in formats very different from IELTS. Engineering reports at IIT Jammu, case analyses at IIM Jammu or long descriptive answers in university exams reward length and coverage. IELTS rewards clarity and precision within a strict time limit.

A few suggestions:

  • Practise to time, by hand if you are taking the paper test. Students used to typing on laptops in college sometimes find 250 handwritten words slow.
  • Think in English for Task 2. If you plan in Hindi, Dogri or Punjabi and translate, sentences can become long and tangled. Brainstorm directly in English, even with simple words.
  • Use local examples carefully. Topics like tourism, traffic, pilgrimage travel, water supply or young people moving abroad for study are perfect places to use what you know from Jammu. Just keep examples brief and general.
  • General Training letters: if you are applying for work abroad, practise formal letters to employers, landlords and offices. The tone matters as much as the content.

How AI feedback and teacher sessions help

With 104 prompts covering Academic charts, tables, processes and maps, General Training letters and all essay types, you can practise every format you might see.

After each response you get:

  • an AI-estimated band for each of the four criteria;
  • feedback on what to improve, criterion by criterion.

This lets you write far more essays than any one teacher could mark. When you want a human view, book a 1-to-1 online session of about 20 minutes with an IELTS teacher from ₹299. Many students bring their two most recent Task 2 essays and ask one question: "What is stopping this from being a 7?"

A weekly Writing routine

  1. Two Task 2 essays, timed at 40 minutes each.
  2. One Task 1 (chart or letter), timed at 20 minutes.
  3. One rewrite of your weakest paragraph using the feedback.
  4. Ten minutes a day on Daily Vocabulary and the English Improvement grammar sections.

Questions from students in Jammu

How long should my IELTS Task 2 essay be?

At least 250 words. Most strong essays are between 260 and 300 words; much longer than that usually means less time for checking and more chance of errors.

Is the AI Writing band the same as an examiner's score?

No. It is an estimate based on the four official criteria and is useful for tracking progress and spotting weaknesses. Your real band may differ, so consider a teacher session for a human opinion before the test.

Can I use Indian examples in my essays?

Yes, examples from India or from Jammu are perfectly fine, as long as they are relevant and brief. Avoid naming specific people or organisations and keep the focus on your argument.

Do I lose marks for writing under 250 words?

Yes. Writing fewer than the minimum words affects your Task Response or Task Achievement score. Count your words in practice so you know roughly how many lines 250 words takes in your handwriting.

Should I write Task 1 or Task 2 first?

You can do either. Many students start with Task 2 because it carries more weight, which makes sure it gets the full 40 minutes; just keep an eye on the time for Task 1.
